Vacancies at the Clipper Race


Round the World Race Skipper

It takes an exceptional candidate to skipper in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. We are not just looking for the best yacht racer or the best sailor, we are also looking for talented and qualified individuals with proven strong leadership and instructing backgrounds. You will be in charge of a squad of approximately 50 crew, up to 20 of whom will be on board at any one time. With no professional mate or engineer on board, it is up to you to develop the skills and personalities in your team to create a competitive entry in the challenge of a lifetime.


To lead a team of novice crew of all ages and abilities, facilitating their race around the world.

Responsibilities include:

  • Ongoing crew training and development throughout the race
  • Team structure and role allocation
  • Safety and seamanship
  • Standard maintenance of an ocean racing yacht
  • Interface between race team and crew
  • Representing boat sponsors, including media and corporate responsibilities.


  • UK MCA Recognised Yachtmaster Ocean with commercial endorsement or IYT (International Yacht Training) Master of Yachts
  • ENG1 Seafarer's medical certificate
  • STCW Proficiency for Persons in Charge of Medical Care Aboard Ships
  • GMDSS GOC/ROC certificate with sat-com endorsement
  • RYA Yachtmaster Instructor or Cruising Instructor

Note: Qualifications in progress may be accepted under certain circumstances.


  • Fluent English (spoken and written)
  • Excellent interpersonal, man management and leadership skills [please give examples in your covering letter]
  • Ability to build, inspire and motivate teams 
  • Strong communications skills
  • Significant offshore/ocean experience (c. 30,000nm), with a significant proportion in command
  • Significant time in command of crewed yachts greater than 50-foot
  • Strong background in sail training
  • Commercial and media awareness and a professional image
  • Offshore yacht racing experience and competitive nature
  • High level of seamanship, practical yacht husbandry and maintenance skills
  • UK Work Visa.

Training Skipper

Clipper Race Training has been developed from the wealth of experience garnered by successfully running eight round the world races.

Training on ocean racing yachts, inexperienced sailors are transformed into highly-skilled racing yacht crews, learning about big boat sailing, racing and strategy.

To carry out the 'on water' element of the sail training for the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race crew ensuring that the training syllabus is completed correctly and the crews attain the correct level of competence.

Commercially Endorsed RYA Yachtmaster Offshore/Ocean and RYAYachtmaster Instructor or Cruising Instructor.

Note: Qualifications in progress may be accepted under certain circumstances.

Significant sail training experience on larger yachts with 10 plus crew.


Training Mate

We’re looking for someone to join our Clipper Race training team.

To assist the Training Skipper in undertaking the 'on water' element of the sailing training for the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race crew

Commercially endorsed RYA Yachtmaster and RYA Cruising Instructor

Sail training experience (minimum 1 year)



Marketing Brand Manager

This is a really exciting opportunity to make a huge impact and spearhead plans to make the next circumnavigation even bigger and better than before.


This is a hands-on leadership role, you will be a motivated self-starter, reporting to the CEO and trusted to:

Marketing Planning

Build and execute comprehensive promotional strategies to meet sales targets for crew berths and sponsorship leads. You will own lead generation for crew and partnership sales, while assisting the Recruitment Director to convert and optimise enquiries. Forecast global crew and partnerships sales, analysing trends and evaluating campaign performance to share in management meetings and develop strong sales stories. Assist partnerships team with co-branded marketing campaigns.

Campaign Execution

Manage large, multi-faceted media properties, including the new race series website, new events website, editing the bi-annual race souvenir magazine, crew recruitment brochure, monthly e-newsletters, event collateral, and updating partnership presentations. Digital activations will be key for the next series. Provide content that is inspirational, enriching, insightful, and entertaining that connects the consumer with the brand. Assist recruitment, crew and partnerships teams with planned email-marketing campaigns. Be a key contributor to race event plans, from stopovers to tradeshow, to ensure the brand story is consistent and the consumer engaged. Continuously investigate new technologies, products and services to create enhanced experiences for key stakeholders, crew, sponsors and supporters of the series.

Brand Management

Champion and act as a gatekeeper for all Clipper Ventures’ brands, ensuring positioning, character and messaging are accurate and consistent across all owned, operated and sponsored properties [including, print, digital, uniforms, boats and buildings]. Optimizing brand guidelines when necessary. Critical stakeholder segments include staff, partners and crew.


8+ years as a marketing leader within a consumer-facing brand.

Solid track record of delivering large, multifaceted campaigns within global environments.

Strong leadership, planning, prioritisation and project management competencies.

Exceptional communication skills, including written, verbal and visual presentations.

Experience of managing large digital campaigns.

A clear strategic thinker, a story teller and innovative marketer able to translate consumer insights.

Agency Management – direct reports of web developers, e-marketing and graphic designers.

Love of adventure is essential.

Sailing knowledge is advantageous.

Ability to travel as needed with the race; work flexible hours/days of the week to coincide with international time zones
