Round The World Race Skipper

It takes an exceptional candidate to skipper in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. We are not just looking for the best yacht racer or the best sailor, we are also looking for talented and qualified individuals with proven strong leadership and instructing backgrounds.

You will be in charge of a squad of approximately 40 crew, up to 17 of whom will be on board at any one time. With no professional mate or engineer on board, it is up to you to develop the skills and personalities in your team to create a competitive entry in the challenge of a lifetime.

Role/Duties:

to lead a team of novice crew of all ages and abilities, facilitating their race around the world.

Responsibilities include:

  • Ongoing crew training and development throughout the race
  • Team structure and role allocation
  • Safety and seamanship
  • Standard maintenance of an ocean racing yacht
  • Interface between race team and crew
  • Representing boat sponsors, including media and corporate responsibilities.

Qualifications:

  • UK MCA Recognised Yachtmaster Ocean with commercial endorsement
  • ENG1 Seafarer's medical certificate
  • STCW Proficiency for Persons in Charge of Medical Care Aboard Ships
  • GMDSS GOC/ROC certificate with sat-com endorsement
  • RYA Yachtmaster Instructor or Cruising Instructor is highly desirable

Note:

Qualifications in progress may be accepted under certain circumstances.

Experience/Skills:

  • Fluent English (spoken and written).
  • Significant offshore/ocean experience (c. 25,000nm), with a significant proportion in command.
  • Significant time in command of crewed yachts greater than 50ft.
  • Strong background in sail training.
  • Commercial and media awareness and a professional image.
  • Offshore yacht racing experience and competitive nature.
  • High level of seamanship, practical yacht husbandry and maintenance skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, man management, team building and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work to financial budgets.

Training Skipper

Clipper Training has been developed from the wealth of experience garnered by successfully running six round the world races and is now open to members of the public as well as signed up crew members.

Training on 60-foot and 68-foot ocean racing yachts, inexperienced sailors are transformed into highly-skilled racing yacht crews, learning about big boat sailing, racing and strategy.

...ensuring that the training syllabus is completed correctly and the crews attain the correct level of competence.

Role/Duties:

To carry out the 'on water' element of the sail training for the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race crew ensuring that the training syllabus is completed correctly and the crews attain the correct level of competence.

Qualifications:

  • Commercially Endorsed RYA Yachtmaster Offshore/Ocean and RYA
  • Yachtmaster Instructor or Cruising Instructor.

Note:

Qualifications in progress may be accepted under certain circumstances.

Experience:

  • Significant sail training experience on larger yachts with 10+ crew.

Training Mate

Role/Duties:

To assist the Training Skipper in undertaking the 'on water' element of the sail training for the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race crew.

Qualifications:

  • Commercially endorsed RYA Yachtmaster and RYA Cruising Instructor.

Experience:

  • Sail training experience (minimum 1 year).
