An intensive programme that will prepare you to tackle the world's oceans

Clipper has a wealth of experience in equipping crew members with the skills and knowledge needed for ocean yacht racing. Our unique approach inspires confidence in individuals to tackle challenging situations and embark on the adventure of a lifetime.

The moment you first set foot onboard a Clipper yacht you embark on your Clipper Training, an intensive in-house programme, delivered at our headquarters on the UK south coast, that will prepare you to tackle the world’s oceans.

The four-part Clipper Training will provide you with a first class training scheme that is both practical and theoretical. Whether you are taking part in a single leg or the whole race, you need the same level of mental, physical and technical preparation.

The first course Part A – Big Boat Sailing, is an intensive eight-day training session on board the yachts and covers basic seamanship and the skills needed to live and work afloat. Part B – Big Boat Racing, is another eight-day course which develops the skills needed to race safely and competitively, with an emphasis on teamwork. Part C – Sail Strategy, is a six-day course during which you will train with your newly allocated team and skipper. It features a two or three-day offshore race where you will be able to experience the real pressures of ocean racing. Round the world crew members complete two Part C courses.

The final week's training is a week-long theory course in Navigation and Meteorology. During this element of the pre-race training you will learn the fundamentals of navigation as well as gaining an understanding weather forecasting, skills that will be very useful during the race. This week also incorporates the RYA Yachtmaster shore based exam.

Clipper Training is also offered by our approved training centre in Asia, Keppel Bay Sailing Academy. Crew from Singapore and the Asia Pacific area will be able to undertake Parts A and B training at KBSA before transferring to Clipper HQ to complete their pre-race training.
