Durban 2010 and Beyond
15 September 2007
Durban 2010 and Beyond arrived in Liverpool early in the morning to rapturous applause from the assorted 20 or so onlookers, composed of friends, family, Clipper employees and construction workers. Luckily we had Jan on board, who was able to translate the interesting Scouse words of encouragement directed at us from the latter. Once in Albert Dock we were able to experience the feeling of living in a fishbowl, our every move being watched and often filmed by the passers-by avid for some free entertainment. Particular interest was shown in Dave and Pete’s dismantling of the starboard heads. Unfortunately, due to lack of space, the greater public was not able to participate in the rare occasion of Tom cooking in the galley, but this was also caught on film for posterity. A number of school classes visited and learned about the hardships of ocean sailing. One of these groups hid a mascot, Warren, on board, which we have yet to find, so that should provide us with an additional incentive to be thorough during our next deep clean. New York attempted to get a head start by leaving three days early, but was spotted and called back. Durban decided to provide the crowds with some action by steaming around the Albert Dock in circles and pretending to ram Western Australia. The hard workers have been rewarded in the evenings by Erika and Anne’s amazing culinary skills and the abundant local nightlife. Joe continued his research of British culture and spent many hours interacting with the locals in the various hostelries. We fear that he may find it difficult to adjust when the only nightlife going is a cup of tea on watch…. We shall all leave Albert Dock and Liverpool with fond memories, and look forward to seeing it again in ten months’ time.
