Surfing big waves - 26 September 2007
26 September 2007
Durban 2010 and Beyond had a fantastic days sailing, logging 121, miles in a 12 hour period. Most of that was spent surfing with the spinnaker up and “Guns and Roses” sounding out on the deck speakers.
It was all going so well, a fantastic days sailing in “Yee ha” conditions, and dinner being prepared by one of the best cooks on board, Anne Dickens. The seas were lively with the occasional 16 knots recorded as we lurched our way from wave top to wave top.
Suddenly there was a loud high pitched scream. Instinctively we all looked up at the kite - had it blown ? No the scream was from down below ! Was everyone alright ?
The disaster which had befallen Durban caused much hilarity. A 5 litre jug of tomato and basil sauce intended for supper had lurched its way upward off the galley worktop, and gravity had done the rest. The normally bright yellow soleboards (floor boards to non sailors) were now a bright sitcky red.
Anne soldiered stoically on and still managed to produce a fantastic pasta dish accompanied by John’s home baked bread rolls…

Greetings to you ALL and three cheers to Anne (Chef of the Seas) for soldiering on with the Pasta and keeping up the spirits of a first class crew.
No doubt you will hear other screams throughout the voyage but hey ho it all adds to the excitement! - how many times can you murder a dish?
Bear down on that Hull and Humber and let them be looking back at you.

Well done you sea dogs. I’ve been monitoring your progress over the last 9 days whilst sunning myself by the side of the hotel pool/beach in Cyprus.
(well somebody’s got to do it!).
Sorry to hear of Anne’s misfortune in the soup kitchen. I recommend daily floggings to stop that sort of caper!
Good luck as you progress Southwards - watch out for those sneaky oompaloompas
ANCHORMAN.
