Glasgow: Scotland with style Clipper's Edwin Harrison sports his natty blue neckwarmer

Hello all,

I am new member to the Glasgow clan and have been asked to write a little something on my life on board.

Since starting out from Durban my life has been divided into units of four, which has taken quite a bit of getting used to. In fact I currently have no idea what day it is and can only roughly guess what time it is by the meal that is put in front of me by the mothers.

On about day three (sorry I cant be more precise – see above) things were getting a little chilly on deck so I went to get my new neck warmer that my mum had given me. I admit it is a slightly shocking bright blue colour but nevertheless I thought it would do the trick. As I appeared out from the cuddy with my new accessory it was met with scorn by these hardened Scottish sailors who obviously didn’t appreciate its softness. However, as time has gone on these same sailors look on it with a touch of jealously in their eyes as I sit nice and warm on the rail.

One final thing I would like to comment on is that never before did I think I would have to spend so much time thinking about what clothes would be needed. Now what with having to get up every 4 hours it seems to be a major topic of conversation. I’m currently up to eight layers at night and spend an unhealthy amount of time for a 26 year old guy thinking whether I will need more or less layers for the next watch.

Hi to all on Glasgow: Scotland with style...ish neck warmers inc!!!  Seems to be an essential piece of kit for this leg - good thinking Edwin’s Mum!

Dafydd - We’ve certainly been experiencing a different kind of ‘Dark and Stormy’ during the last 24 hrs here in Aberaeron and there’s definitely more on the way as we’re all congregating in the Harbourmaster tonight for the opening of the new bar!!!

Onwards and upwards Glasgow!

12. John Diffenthal, Sandhurst, Berkshire, UK 09 December 2007

Guys, you’re flying ...  Borrowing Brian’s phrase - “Glad to see that you’re sailing it like ya stole it”.  This has been a terrific effort, I guess that it hasn’t been easy - but no complaints about the lack of custard on this leg.  Just 33 miles away from Durban in 1st place and no-one in the fleet is going faster than you are.  Keep this up for another week and you could have a real celebration when you get into port.

Go Glasgow!

15. Chris Goodfellow, Burnham 10 December 2007

Guess you are getting warmer now but at 5 knots heading towards a high you may not want that, anyway, best wishes for the tricky winds ahead, and I hope the southerlies reach you by tomorrow, even if it’s cold again!
Regards
Chris Goodfellow

16. BOB PENMAN, GLASGOW 10 December 2007

I notice you only did 30 miles in the last 12 hours!  You also have made a dive north which looks as if it may pay off. Best of luck, still everything to play for

17. Gary Rock, Sydney, NSW 14 December 2007

G’day Gordie and fellow crew of the good ship Glasgow! An improvement of one placing to 5th in this leg will see you tied for 1st in the overall race to date. (Presuming that Durban hold on to their 1st place status into Fremantle). Good sailing towards the Great Southern Land!
Ali, Michaela, and Coralie look forward to catching up with you when you arrive in Australia.
All the best
Gary
