The Bay of Biscay
24 September 2007
Well we knew it was going to be tough but last night was for most of us our toughest sailing to date.
After a peaceful light wind start, punctuated only by the noise of the helicopter filming us in all our glory, we settled onto our course away from La Rochelle. Apart from a couple of crew suffering from mystery illnesses all was fine with the mother-watch getting praise for a good dinner.
By midnight the wind was starting to build and by 3am all hell had broken loose.
The Race Director’s predicted front had arrived and we certainly knew about it. With many from each watch on deck until dawn we had a fight on our hands with reefs, headsail changes and public enemy number 1 the #1 Yankee…
Minutes became hours as we worked to get the foredeck under control with more and more crew struggling to get on deck and help. By then sea-sickness had claimed a couple more victims and we needed to tack asap to get back on course. It was hard but it did happen.
With the sunrise the wind started to ease but we have still had around 20 knots of breeze all day leaving little opportunity to take stock of the night before.
Two onboard celebrated wedding anniversaries one on the 23rd and one on the 24th - we certainly won’t be forgetting them in a hurry!
Time to go sailing…

Hi Andy
Sounds like it was a bit rough out there. However, if you still think the No.1 Yankee is public enemy number 1, you can’t have dragged down the Big # Genoa half an hour later than when it should have been dropped!
Best of luck
Stephen M

Tell Gordon Lawson he needs to pass around the Bombay Bad Boy Pot Noodles. that will fix the sea sickness for sure. It did when we did the North sea Race in Jun 2006.

Hi Lisa and your new best mates! Congratulations on the result of the first leg. I am jealous as hell of what you are doing and wish you all the best and will keep tracking Glasgow’s progress. Lisa, are they supplying you with red wine intravenously whilst at sea so you can keep your hands free!? Keep your chin up throughout and get that boat shifting up the fleet as best you can!!! Take care of you and all around you. Neil, Cass and Maddy.

Message for crew and in particular Drew McLaren!!!
Things are going not too bad in Scotland. Crops are being drilled and the ground is not moving as much as the sea is for you!, i.e. good settled weather!!
Drew, We hope you are coping okay and are looking forward to hearing all about your exploits on return.
In the meantime all the best and fly the SALTIRE well and chase the first place.
Regards,
David, the thursday crew and the more peaceful sailers of the WEST COAST.
