Glasgow: Scotland with style perform a spinnaker peel

There is no “I” on a Glasgow Clipper
Just 14 crew and a damn good skipper.
We’re split into watches “Tatties and “Neeps”.
When one’s at work the others asleep.
Until the skipper gives the call
“All on deck, there’s sails to haul!”
We ease and grind until eyes bleed
To keep the boat at its top speed.
We do our best and when the race is run
It’s off to a bar for a “cheeky one”.
We’re quite unique as in kilts we dress.
What’s underneath is for you to guess!
“Och aye” we wear them with a smile
For we are Glasgow, Scotland With style!

1. Dee & Nick Sawyer, West wales -- Aberaeron! 02 November 2007

Ahhhh wee Sue, you’re a cool one…… Erica has some poetic competition.

If you take the west wind and they take to drinking,
Then you’ll be in Durban before ‘ee,
Coz out on the briny there’s more wind than fizz
On the black bonny clipper from Glazgee

Puff Dafydd’s a rapper, a yellow crocking jazzer,
And he sings “Calon Lan” free and easy,
But you can’e hoist a sail to a ballad in a breeze,
On the black bonny clipper from Glazgee

(with apologies to the “Bonnie Banks O’ Loch Lomond”)

hoist ‘em sails, blow ‘em all down.......

2. Rosie McLaren, Alloa 02 November 2007

Love it Sue! Just about sums you lot up..... but as well as the unquestionable style (and a few surprises under those great kilts!) the Glasgow Clipper has oodles of personality, a brilliant team spirit, a formidable skipper, determination and the ability to do truly great things .......... so go for it Hannah and the hard-working tatties and neeps! Durban here we come!
Scotland is rootin tootin for you!

You’re doing great crew.  Impeccable race planning so far; none of this flashy drastic changes of course, just aiming for the Cape!  Don’t forget you have a reputation to maintain.  The change of weather with stronger winds must be great to concentrate the mind; just believe that life is always lived at 40 degrees to the horizontal!  Enjoy every minute and every lurch and crash!  Rooting for you Colin and all xxx Lynn

4. barbara & Jon, aberaeron 02 November 2007

5. Dipxy, Dumfriesshire 03 November 2007

Come on the wee ‘Black Pearl’ ... the race is most definitely on.  It’s reported that you’re experiencing the wind, as predicted so use all you have available to you ... get those kilts off too and use them.

Loved the poem ... the crew are unique, the ‘Black Pearl’ is unique and Scotland is most definitely unique.  Go get them and remember “nae man can tether time not tide”

Good luck
x

6. Chris Goodfellow, Burnham 03 November 2007

Great to see you’re doing 11 knots now. Keep it up, show us how you surf with kilts on!

7. Jimmy and the Thursday Night Crew, Clackmannan Scotland 03 November 2007

Devastating news for Drew and the crew , the twin of your wee inflatable lamb deflated for the last time on Thursday night due to complications following a love bite from Kelso Logan Congratulations on Glasgows success to Salvador and hopefully Durban will be Scotlands No. 1

8. Robin Brunton, Glasgow 04 November 2007

Nicola had all hands on deck just off Byres Road on Friday night - Bar Buddha and Cafe Andaleus - actually all sounds exotic - great night - joined by Gordon and Ursula from Glasgow Marketing and Benromach people .On Saturday morning it was “roll” call - actually rolls with bacon and runny eggs in The University Cafe ,Byres Road (a greasy spoon par excellance - another institution in the West End of Glasgow ) then off to The Whisky Show in the SECC - fully kitted out with Benromach signage to advertise the race on the stand of Benromach - we “had “to sample some of the drams - a 50 year old even ! That is a whisky not me Erica and Sue .
So if you think life is tough out there - Nicola will be calling all hands on 7 Dec to do the same again with survivors from Durban trip.
But the chat was all about how brilliantly you are all doing - hang on in there .
Stay Alive

enjoyed the wrap , however , i always thought there was chicken in a wrap! perhaps with a touch of salsa . By now expect your all feeling the effects of all your hard work , on the plus side although you’ve dropped 2 places you’ve taken 29 mls of the leader ,so all the effort is paying off . Keep up the good work , your nearly halfway through the leg , then it will be all downhill , stay focused ,good luck to you all, especially you sian , were all with you & following every move ,a bit further south would’nt be a bad idea ! tony & norma

10. Smokey Decla'n, of Arbroath 04 November 2007

Up the pace a bit me hearties, theres a race to be won.

What shall we do when we get to Durban ?
Early in the morning

Swab down the decks and wait for the laggards
Early in the morning

See how the Saltire flies on the podium
Early in the morning

Hooray and up she rises
Sailing is full of surprises
Hooray and up she rises
Early in the morning

Lift up our kilts show our neeps and tatties
Early in the morning

Off to the bar for a cheeky cocktail
Early in the morning

What shall we do with a drunken sailor ?
Early in the morning

(no apologies….)

11. Joe McIlwaine, At Work!!! 08 November 2007

Hi guys met with the on shore crew on Friday night had a great time… building that team spirit ready for leg 4 when a few of us leggers join you in Oz. The Black Pearl really has bound us as one big family both on board and at home and its thanks to you guys and the belief that we really can do something special this year.
All are sponsers are right behind you too especially the Glasgow team and the guys from Benroamach so much so that members of their Benromach staff have signed up to join as leggers and are currently doing their training… brilliant… thats all down to you guys and the kindred spirit you are showing.
Like all the rest of the guys we are so proud of you all and proud to be part of what your all doing out there.
Keep the spirits high, the sailing strong.... but the poetry needs a bit of work… me thinks you have all been reading to much of the great McGonnagle.
Joe
