Tuck Box Trouble

13 November 2007

Glasgow: Scotland with style Clipper's tuck box issues

Glasgow: Scotland with style Clipper is fast approaching the shores of another continent, Africa, having crossed the Atlantic for a second time now. Within a day or two we will all be “Cape Hoper’s”, or should that be, no hopers, shouts the skip, and on the way up the coast through the Agulhas current and in to sunny Durban for a few cheeky ones.!

Over the past few days we have had wee Sue switch over to the Tatties watch to cover for poor Sian, who has been banished to the galley on light duties by Dr Erica following a case of severe sore shoulders. Now, some of you whom know Sian, may say, that she could do with a few days in the galley picking up a few tips, as her previous culinary skills have been limited to washing strawberries, for dipping into a chocolate fondue. Gladly, I can report, that Sian is now well up to turning out a wicked lentil cottage pie, however she is now suffering from severe case of “I want to helm‘itis” as we are currently surfing 20 ft waves at speeds of up to19.7 knots.

Back to the transfer of Sue, which happened very smoothly, and Sue was warmly embraced by her new watch, Tatties, until the contents of the watch tuck box was raised by the Tatties. Let me explain, each watch has a tuck box for between meal, snacks filled with chocolate, sweets etc and this is replenished daily at around 10.00ish. Consumption of the items in the box is controlled, or not, as the case may be, by the crew of that watch. Now Neaps are the squirrels of the tuck box world, and always have a fairy full box, whereas Tatties have gorged most of the contents by 10.30. So Tatties came up with a perfectly logical proposition that one sixth of the contents of the box should be transferred with Sue.

Neaps did not bite and rejected the plan, however in their haste to hold onto their goodies, they lost sight of the fact that Sue is our number one victualing diamond, and has emergency supplies stashed away, around the boat, for smoothing out these tricky situations. Let’s just say “…… actually I couldn’t possibly comment as my Mum has always told me not to speak with my mouth full ……. munch, munch, yum, yum, thanks Sue”.

2. Caroline Fitzpatrick, dornoch 13 November 2007

Great to see you pushing hard to the finish line - knew you would do it and you are all a great team.  Sue Smith keep up the good work and enjoy Durban!  Keeping the golf club informed of progress.  Talk again on the next leg.  Take care Glasgow Clipper.

3. Lorna & Jon Darke, Barry, Vale of Glamorgan 13 November 2007

Hi Hannah, Glasgow crew and Siany,
We know that Siany in the galley might be the reason for all your weight loss but please do you have to sit around raiding tuck boxes when you’ve got Durban behind you and Durban in front!  Yes, know it’s coming up to panto season but please do not look behind you - just lose them and carry on doing what you do best which would appear to be chasing the leaders down!  Podium position coming up, sail hard, fast and safe and think of the delights available in port when you get there!
Now Go Get ‘em (have you a rifle, pistol or anything to ward off clippers coming past in the night - might be an idea to check!), watch out for the real pirates! (There’re behind you).
Good luck to all on the BP, (rub for Siany’s shoulders please,

Lorna & Jon
PS. Siany, hair not too bad really.

4. Lorna & Jon Darke, Barry, Vale of Glamorgan 14 November 2007

Go Glasgow GO - but PLEASE get rid of the Durban behind you - still looks like your towing it on race viewer!  Hannah & crew keep it up, must be another podium place.  We know your tired but well past 12pm now and I must go to bed, (sorry you can’t), will see how you are doing in the morning.  Also, well done Hull & Humber - brilliant sailing. Someone rub Siany’s shoulders for everyone back home!  GO GET A PODIUM PLACE!!! (Fast & safe, as always) xxx
Fingers crossed,
Lorna & Jon

5. Alison Rock, Sydney, NSW 14 November 2007

To all the crew on Glasgow, make sure that Gordon eats something!!! He must be on the Neaps watch by the looks of the most recent photo posted. Aren’t you feeding him at all?! Even Colin rang me in amazement to discuss Gordie’s weight loss - Colin reckons 15kg!!! I think I’ll have to take up ocean sailing!

Keep up the fantastic performance and make sure you get a decent rest and feed in Durban - not too long to go now!

All the best, especially to gaunt Gordie!
Ali xx

6. Andy Cole, Worcester 14 November 2007

Great blog Dafydd I’m sure those secret Nutri-grain bars went down a treat.
Even better though is your sailing performance over the last couple of days!
Regardless of Glasgow’s final position, Hannah and the crew must have been doing an awesome job to create yet another exciting finish.
With only 16 miles covering 4 boats I know it is going to be tough and I dread to think how many sail changes per watch are going on at the moment! Keep it going though and very best of luck for a place on the podium.
Finally, I expect you know by now but I’ll be joining you all in Durban...well the chance to be part of the Southern Ocean surfing excitement was just too good to miss…
Cheers
Andy

7. Dee & Nick Sawyer, West wales -- Aberaeron! 14 November 2007

8. Ian & Barbara McGeachie, Malta 14 November 2007

Keep going Glasgow! You’re doing great!
Even though we’re on holiday in Malta, we’re keeping tabs on the race each day.

9. Sarah Sheppard, Crowthorne, England 14 November 2007

Never mind the chocolate Glasgow think of those lovely cool beers.  You’re having a fantastic race - keep up the great progress to the line.

10. SARAH REYNOLDS, cardiff 14 November 2007

Hello to all on the Black Pearl you are doing sooo well- but my advice is keep Sian away from the tuck box as she likes a bit of choccy and pleased to know her culinary skills are improving.fingers crossed for a podium finish lots of luv Sarah and Nana.

11. Joe McIlwaine, At Work!!! 14 November 2007

Come on guys one final push, you are gaining on the leaders but the pack is bearing down on you at the same time. A brilliant last 12 hours recorded just need another few of the same. I just wish this was updated in real time although my job may suffer as a result.

Brilliant, well done, walk tall with pride.

Joe

12. John Diffenthal, Sandhurst, Berkshire, UK 14 November 2007

Got a bit of a fright with this morning’s report - you were shown as 6th in the table although clearly nip and tuck between 4 boats.  Winding up the zoom on Google maps appeared to show you at the head of the group.  At mid-day order has been restored in the table and you have a clear 3rd place although it’s all a bit close still.

Very exciting.  Go Glasgow!

13. Doddsy, The Weege 14 November 2007

Come on Jimmies!!

Awesome effort to get where you are, looking forward to seeing another podium finish (fingers and everything else crossed). Its the sail changes between here and the cold frothy ones in Durban that’ll make the difference so keep up the amazing work.

Apparently I’m meant to be working but finishes like this is making it a little tricky.

With you every mile and sail change to Durban, keep the Big Black y’un flying along.

Yours more than a little jealously,

Doddsy
(ps hope the box is refilled in time for Qingdao!)

14. rory gillard, fareham 14 November 2007

hammer down hannah, guys and girls!! top job, keep it up, SAIL THE CLOTH!!, rory

15. Colin Bell, Hobart, Tasmania 15 November 2007

Gaunt Gordie indeed, obviously hasn’t spent too much time in the watch tuck box!
Antway, you’re nearly to Durban so I’m sure you’ll all have a bit of R & R to make up for the deprivations of the Atlantic and in preparation for the next leg to Aus. Colin

16. Clan Blaikie, Milnathort 15 November 2007

Come on Glasgow - nearly there but you’ll have to ‘take Liverpool’ to get that podium place back! You’ve all worked so hard and must be exhausted but hang in there - we know you can do it!!! xxxx

17. Gary Rock, Sydney, NSW 15 November 2007

Go Glasgow! A podium finish will see you leading the race at the finish of the 3rd leg in Durban. Push hard into port and enjoy a well deserved pit stop before coming across to the Great Southern Land.

All the best
Gary, Ali, Michaela, and Coralie
“The Rocks”

18. James Dorothy and Alison, Coleraine N.Ireland 15 November 2007

To Hannah and crew
Stick with it Glasgow.  Keep up the pressure.  The Black Pearl can do it!  We’re all rooting for you.  Stay safe, love to Lisa xx

19. Helen Dingley, Gargunnock, Stirling 15 November 2007

Come on Glasgow - you can do it.  It is amazing looking at the race viewer seeing how little distance there is between some of the boats.  Hopefully you have enough in the tuck boxes to keep you going until you arrive in Durban - third place!!!
Hope your enjoying it Dave, keeping Mum up to date, from Helen and family

20. Brian & Dru, Peterborough 15 November 2007

Come on Glasgow, step on that accelerator!  You’ll no doubt be pleased to see dry land after what, to us landlubbers, seemed a pretty turbulent journey.  Well done

21. Sue Scott, Glasgow 15 November 2007

You must all be knackered!!  Nearly there now only a few miles left.  Cant believe Gordie has lost weight not with the amount he eats!!  With you all the way.  Sue XX

22. John Diffenthal, Sandhurst, Berkshire, UK 15 November 2007

My fingernails can’t take much more of this.  You’re currently 4th.  The good news is that you covered more ground than all but 2 of the other boats in the fleet during the last 12 hours.  If you could replicate that performance during the next 12 then you’ll have made 3rd.

Go Glasgow!

23. Alison Rock, Sydney, NSW 16 November 2007

Nail biting stuff Glasgow! I’ve just logged on at work to find that Hull & Humber have taken line honours, followed by New York. Liverpool is currently a fraction ahead of you but we all know you’ll be doing everthing possible to beat them to the finish! We’re barracking for you Glasgow! Good luck to you all!

Best to Gordie and the rest of the crew.

COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!! (Lleyton Hewitt style!!!)

Ali xx

24. Hilary Connelly, Houston 16 November 2007
