Welcome to Race 13

17 June 2008

Clipper crew enjoying Nova Scotia's hospitality

Welcome to Race 13, the penultimate race in the Clipper Round the World roller coaster.
Carlsberg don’t do race starts but if they did the Sydney start would be it.

Piped bands marching through the streets with hundreds of children to see us off. Then a great tactical tacking battle right from the start line at Royal Cape Breton Yacht Club all in glorious sunshine.

24 hrs later and we’re being escorted in light airs across the Grand Banks by dolphins and Minkey whales. They don’t seem to mind the cold and fog but then again it’s probably easier to see an iceberg from under the water which is good because the fishy smell wouldn’t mean a lot to them!

We now need to reach a waypoint south of Newfoundland where icebergs fear to tread (?). Then the race really hots up, this suits us just fine as we’re currently in 10th place travelling at about 15 sail changes per hour.

It seems a distant memory since the Sowesters were singing and playing spoons in the Crown and Moose in Sydney. Andy thinks he may have fallen in with the wrong crowd but we don’t think he means us…

Next stop Cork!

Lots of love

Mick and crew on the Black Pearl

PS thanks for the Fathers Day card girls!

2. Dave Munro, Halifax 19 June 2008

Hey gang, from the race viewer you’re doing well so stop horsing around Mick and trim those sails! It was great sailing with you all and I’ll be watching closely.

Cheers, Dave

3. Edgars, Halifax 19 June 2008

My husband and I meet Skipper Jenner’s parents in Halifax.  We had a great conversation with them and there was no doubt how proud they were of the whole crew and especially their daughter.  We didn’t get a chance to say goodbye to them or meet you.  Good luck on the rest of your race. Hope you enjoyed your Nova Scotia experience.

4. Dee & Nick Sawyer, Aberaeron, West Wales 19 June 2008

GOOD LUCK and we hope you have a fast and safe trip.
The Black Pearl needs the podium place!!
Best wishes
Dee & Nick Sawyer

5. Pam and Michael, Keighley 19 June 2008

Come on Black Pearl, put some effort in and get to Cork first.  Plenty of time to catch up.  We know you can do it.

6. Pam and Michael, Keighley 19 June 2008

Sorry will not be able to follow your progress after Monday.  Hope to have good news on our return from holiday.

7. Elizabeth Coghill, Dornoch 20 June 2008

Think of the Guinness and get there first!  Can highly recommend.  Will be waiting for you all.

8. Emma, 20 June 2008

Great to see you guys racing again.  All the best with your last ocean crossing, keeping everything crossed for you guy’s and the fight for the podium.

Managed to track down a TV yesterday to see the first episode of the Konrad’s program. Featuring Hannah’s crew briefing and various crew preparation, egerly anticipating the next episode.

See you in Liverpool - Good Luck, Emma.

11. Sandy Paskins, Soggy Solihull 21 June 2008

Hi Glasgow! More close duelling but I know you’ll save the best till last! Enjoy the trip across the ‘pond’. Cheers! sandy

12. John Diffenthal, Sandhurst, Berkshire, UK 21 June 2008

I don’t understand tonight’s report - Jamaica seems to have moved over 100 miles further than you during the last 6 hours which is straining the bounds of credulity.  I’ll just assume it’s a Clipper reporting error similar to the one where they had the track of one boat deep into Namibia.

Go Glasgow!  ‘whatever happens, you aren’t going to lose 3rd place in the overall table, so take advantage of any opportunity to try something risky if there is some chance of making ground on the leaders.

Sail safe and fast, guys.  It will be all over soon!  [and then what will you do?]

13. Caroline Fitzpatrick, Dornoch 22 June 2008

Hi Everyone - hope you are getting the winds we are having in Dornoch today along with the horizontal rain!  Good Scottish summer weather..  All of you are very close together again and it is anyone’s race.  Let’s hope it’s the Black Pearl’s turn.  Keep it up and find those winds.  Take care and safe sailing.  Best wishes Caroline Fitzpatrick

14. Chris Goodfellow, Burnham 22 June 2008

Come on Black Pearl!
Hannah you look well placed to stay in the leading group.
Keep up the 9 knots as long as you can and let the jet stream speed you into Cork!
Good luck for your penultimate race.
Regards
Chris Goodfellow
