Xmas past - Xmas present

09 January 2008

Glasgow show sunglasses are essential

Having left Fremantle after Xmas we have now passed Christmas island on our way to Singapore . The weather since 1 Jan till now has been fabulous during the day with very high temperatures and reasonable boat speeds – perfect Ocean sailing – at night we have witnessed a truly stunning red sunset silhouetting other clipper boats – very clear nights with the amazing stars in the Southern Hemisphere – fellow crew pointing out the Southern Cross. Superb family atmosphere on Glasgow Clipper – we new leggers have been well received and now starting to gel – there appears to be an”older” watch – tatties and the young bucks the neeps – good banter and “happy hour” change over is a cracking way to get to know everyone.

At present lying 6th but now confident we can pull that back- lots of interest coming up soon- Little Krakatoa and Straits of Sunda with Java on one side and Sumatra on the other.

With unrelenting hot temperatures every day the thought of snow in Perthshire right now seems very appealing –it is a funny old world !!

A parting thought is to the amusing sight of crew coming off an arduous watch and attempting to read a book – without exception they all fall asleep within minutes to wake to find the book lying on top of them – just like young children - as if shot by a sniper .

Glasgow,

The Old Man and the Sea gives a good account, although not quite to the standard of Hemingway’s prose.

Wishing you swift travel Santiago et al.

Looks like a pleasant day out on the Solent, are you sure you’re not fooling us as to your whereabouts?  Also I’m concerned that there doesn’t appear to be anyone on the helm in this shot.  You can’t win if you have the auto pilot on!  And what is Paul looking so miserable about - being described as an ‘old boy’ ?  Go Glasgow Go!

3. John Diffenthal, Sandhurst, Berkshire, UK 11 January 2008

Great work!  This evening’s report says that during the past 12 hours you have covered more ground than every boat ahead of you.  If you could keep on doing that for the next couple of days then my fingernails would be in much better shape.

Go Glasgow!

Hi Guys Remember the crew that went before and the crew to come. That podium position is important to all, especially to Hannah.Enjoy but don’t forget the “Black Pearl” is very special! She deserves the very best from you all.Zen Dog’s moto may not apply-"He know’s not where he’s going for the ocean will decide,it’s not the destination it’s the glory of the ride” Go Glasgow GO.You can do it,give Hannah and the Black Pearl your ALL & MORE God’s Speed and good luck.

Come on GG cut the sunbathing and the sightseeing and get racing, nerve wracking logging on now.  Stay safe but Go Glasgow Go Glasgow, Mag Den Vicki Laura & Peter (Mum says get on with it) xx

7. Dipxy, Dumfriesshire 12 January 2008

Joe, glad to see you’re having a fun time.  However, there’s no time for sunbathing, get those flags flying, top the tan up in Singapore and sail the clipper home to a podium finish.  You can do it ... Go Glasgow Go

Safe journey
x

8. Tod Baker, Isle of Wight 13 January 2008

Go Glasgow I’m sure you can get a podium here… Good Sailing and Good Luck to you all.

9. Lorna & Jon Darke, Barry, Vale of Glamorgan 13 January 2008

Hannah and crew - a close race but still a podium position achievable for the Black Pearl - lying 5th at the moment but not too much in it. Chase those leaders down, sail hard and fast and GO (perhaps its time to take the sun glasses off now so you can see whose in front?!!) Now go get ‘em!

10. David Frame, Lenzie 14 January 2008

Robin, I see that you have managed to stay onboard; unlike in your younger days with vans and mobile shops. Good to see that you are enjoying the start of the adventure but now not quite sure of your motives as the Glasgow Herald (Sat 12 January) has an article by Martin Wishart, the chef, in which he explains that he will be cooking for you guys when you reach Singapore (hopefully first). Billy W sends his regards and I have to let you know that the Jimmy Blair afternoon was postponed until you get back. 60 today and I will explain how to fill in the form for a bus pass on your return. Go Glasgow Go. and all the best to the rest of the crew.

Hey RBB

Glad to hear you haven’t fallen off yet - keep going - the finishing line is fast approaching!
Everyone is following your progress intently and wishing you well.
The office isn’t the same without you. Hear from you soon

Hi to all
Good to read your comments Robin and happy to see you admitting to being in the “older watch”.
Speaking personally - the snow in Perth was breathtaking but as usual, its short lived and I think I can speak for the majority of Scots who would trade the visions that you portray for our lousy January weather anytime.
We were at the caravan for Christmas - -13 Degrees and no water haha what would you prefer?
Take good care - Love Fi and Tom
