Goodbye Nova Scotia
17 June 2008
The hospitality of Nova Scotia will long be remembered.
Arriving on Friday 13th in force 7, gusting force 8, we were very cold and wet. The greeting on the quayside, however, near the giant fiddle, was warm and welcoming. Hot drinks and roast chicken supper soon thawed us out! (Our close win over westernaustralia2011.com, of 32 seconds, of the Democracy 250 Race, also added to the warm glow!)
Entertainment was provided all day at the pier for all visitors and Clipper crew. First Nation people showed us some traditional music and dance along with some spectacular costumes. Drinks and fireworks at the Yacht Club proved to be very popular!
After doughnuts and coffee at the Royal Cape Breton Yacht club, local school children led the procession under each country’s flag, to the boats. Crowds of well-wishers waved the boats off. Race start was very exciting with lots of close calls as the yachts fought for position at the start. The weather was kind and the sun shone all day, as we rounded the headland and set fair the sails for Cork!
