Race 10
19 May 2008
After the amazing passage through the Panama Canal we had an overnight stay at the Shelter bay Marina with very good facilities, this was to gather the fleet together for race 10. We slipped off yesterday afternoon for an overnight sail to the rendezvous point, practising our race start procedures on the way!
At about 9am. The whole fleet of ten Clipper yachts shuffled back and forth until a line was formed (all of us had butterflies at this point!). When all were in place the 1 minute countdown began to the engine being turned off! The engine had to be off for 1 minute before we, all sat behind the coffee grinder, could rush forward and do the race start that we had practiced so well. In fact we had a cracking start and into the lead!
Before long we hit a squall. Port side in the water and the crew ballast 15 foot in the air on Starboard, fortunately the skipper Danny was on the helm with the bottle to do what needed to be done and ensure that everyone else did as well, taking us into a clear lead!
I cannot explain the thrill and excitement that you get from this, apart from getting absolutely soaked from the torrential rain that comes with a squall; you have waves crashing over the bow with rivers running down the deck! But the water IS warm!
Will we win? Well, if it is down to the happy spirit, the camaraderie and skill of this superb team of the Hull & Humber, then there is only one answer! The Humber region should be very proud of what is being done here on Hull & Humber to promote a growing excellent future! I know that I am!
Love to all especially my family.
Will see you Sunday as planned.
