A day in the life of Crime Watch

06 February 2008

Liverpool 08's crime watch

It’s currently Wednesday midday and crime watch are on the verge of finishing their 3rd watch of the day, only another 1 to go until the cycle starts again tomorrow.

Although sailing conditions haven’t changed since the race start (constant close hauled), no watch is ever the same (for a number of reasons).  We start the beginning of each watch, no matter what time of the day with 3 teas white no sugar, 1 black coffee 2 sugars, an excuse for an orange juice & a mocha white 2 large sugars!  A 15 minute dash of head usage, teeth brushing and dressing in our good old faithful oilies! (It’s still too warm for boots so freedom of bare feet is still the norm).

As the constant climb uphill of the boat remains the same, you never really know what to expect when you get up on deck for watch change.  We’ve had an endless count of fishing and tanker vessels, which in most cases are way too close for comfort.  Small fishing vessels that look very similar to a shed floating with the worst smell ever, they also seem to find it really interesting to come and have a look at us!  (It’s at these times I wish there was smellá´vision) Then nothing really much happening which then leads to the most bizarre and unusual findings of your fellow crew i.e. men wearing thongs and admitting it...not a pretty thought I might add! Eleni trying to dive overboard, not a good idea…Doc Dave (no he’s not clumsy…now stop it ha ha) standing on poor Will’s manly belongings & then Will returning the favour by hanging on for dear life to poor Doc Dave’s manly belongings after a tack…As I said, no watch is ever the same but oh my god we do have some laughs…Alannah we’re rooting for you to unravel FGE, go ed girl!

Then we have the antics of meal times.  Again each meal time bringing its own freshly made delights…Its amazing how a loaf can look so different on a daily basis.  How a muffin can taste so right but also so wrong…Corned beef hash altered to corned beef chilli con carne has got to be an all time favourite (believe me guys & gals your not missing much at all) JP I suggest along with the preparation work your putting in at home for life on board, start eating unusual concoctions to get your gut ready…It could get messy, ha ha.  Then there’s the good old tack in the middle of meal times.  A watch swapping seats in the saloon, with their food & drink, condiments, KFS & considering the angle of the boat is always worth a good belly laugh! (those of you who are joining us have lots of fun & games coming your way…your all going to love it)

No watch is complete without numerous sail trimming, sail changes and putting in / shaking out reefs.  Along with this, your daily job of Navigator, Engineer, Deck hand, Cleaner or Mother.  Each of which brings its own fun and games.  Personally I think we should rename the role of Engineer to Plumber.  I think that fits the bill more so, ha ha.

Finally, we head below deck, take off our wet clothes & oilies.  Have a little giggle (not always at Dave, mostly with him, ha ha) have a quick check of our emails then head for our bunk space with our fully charged ipod ready to feel the slam dunking of the boat before the cycle of ´a day in the life´begins again…

As always thanks to all our followers, your support means the world, cheers everyone

1. Jill Pope, Liverpool 08 February 2008

Keep on the pressure L08, you can do it! Glad that the Scouse humour is still prevailing as well as the winds. Despite my brother -in -laws comments I do think some of Richards massage skills have been influenced by me, with some professional advice rubbing (!) off.
Richard: 2nd Allerton Scouts and Mossley Hill church send best wishes to you and all the crew. Our phone is constantly ringing with enquiries as to how you are getting on; I suspect the door bell would be ringing too if it was working (another job added to the growing list for when you return). Love, Jill

2. Sue Haslam, Chester 08 February 2008

5. Libby Jones, Sunny North Berwick 08 February 2008

Glad to hear you are having a few good laughs along the way.  Not all at Dave, though, I hope, although I suspect he deserves most of what you give him!  Keep up all the good effort - seems like some of your tactics are paying off.  I don’t envy some of those wild conditions though.  Take care of yourselves.  Libby (Dave’s little sister)

Enjoying reading the blogs but very pleased I’m inside, on level ground, warm and dry. Last weekend we had a leg 1 reunion where I met Tommo & Neil for a meal it was fun remembering the highs and lows and the “how can we make the boat go faster” brainstorm. We’re following you every day and are encouraged by the climb up the leader board. Keep it up, enjoy yourselves and keep safe

11. Keith & Thelma, hereford 09 February 2008

Your blogs are getting better and better Lisa you will able to write a book about your experiences when you have completed the trip.
We are glued to the 6 hourly updates, delighted to see that you have moved up 2 places, come on Liverpool, come on Mike, Mills is willing you on from Adelaide.
Lots of love and happy sailng Keith and Thelma

12. Ian Tomlinson, Mere Brow, Lancashire 10 February 2008

Good to hear there’s plenty of fun on board.

I’m currently preparing to join the boat in Jamaica for Leg 7 in May by eating soil and drinking dishwater.

Miss all the shananaghans from the fist leg but enjoying a soft bed, plenty of rest and and home cooked soil.

Will bring plenty of Sudocreme, 35 pairs of trollies and a secret stash of Mars Bars.

For now, get stuck-in and move up the positions to make it an exciting run-in to the finish.

Hugs and kisses,

Ian Tomo.

13. Alannah Gauld, Somerset 10 February 2008

ah hoy to all of you aboard the pool!!!!

as for my dad having his ‘manly belongings’ tugged, i would say despite you all saying it was an accident that he probably deserved it, (at last a way to control him) for all his winding up (he is where I get it from!)

As for FGE i am very VERY confused, i have some ideas, and have emailed them to my dad but he has failed to say whether they are right or not. i am guessing the first word to be a rude one i cannot say on the website and the G to be Good or Great, the E however im pretty stuffed on. either of them right?

i am still rather concerned that my dad is on Baywatch due to his god like physique COUGHCOUGH! i was thinking of a special one just for him, the weightwatcher. raspberry

anyway i hope that all is well aboard, not long till qingdao now, and not much time left with the sarcy doctor namely my father!( and just a thought from the last blog about the boat being on a constant angle, his bunk doesnt happen t e on that side does it?? smile )

Good luck

i shall work on the FGE thing!!
All the best

Alannah

14. Alannah Gauld, Somerset ( carrot crunching land) 10 February 2008

hello again have been thinking up some suggestions for the FGE, some more bizarre than others, and some only my dad may get, anyway here I go:-

Fat G*ts Elite (tims suggestion)
Forever Going E_______
For Gingers Everywhere ( my Dad will get this one)
For Gaulds Everywhere
For Geezers Everywhere

I expect it is something completely random, but was worth a guess, are any of those words right at all?

love Alannah

Hi everyone, all the children from St.Paul’s ,Liverpool are willing you on to the finishing line. Hope conditions are not too cold and choppy for you. We had a fantastic visit from Akmed, and Jon Paul, along with Barbara Gowans. Akmed had plenty of funny stories for the children relating life on board and obviously wishing he was still there with you all.  It is half term holidays at the moment but the children will be delighted when I read them Lisa’s letter next week- many thanks.

25. Roy Stevens, Lytham St Annes 16 February 2008

Dear Ben and Crew,
I hope you are enjoying being back on dry land and a well earned rest. The last leg sounds horrendous. I’m sure if they hadn’t finished the race early you would have mounted a late surge and would have gained several more places. Well done everyone.
You’ll never believe it Liverpool have been knocked out of the FA cup by Barnsley. It looks like the only way for the old city to get any glory this year is for us to bring the Clipper cup. I can’t wait to come out to Jamaica to join you and get stuck into the opposition.
Best wishes
Roy
