Leaving New York’s never easy
06 June 2008
And it wasn’t this time either. It was as if the city was weeping our departure wrapping us in a thick fog. The short passage to the open seas was spent dodging Staten Island Ferries, random tankers and the odd Clipper yacht. This was the scene when we arrived a few days earlier. First the magnificent skyline appeared in the horizon and as the sun set, we were able to make out some of our favourite buildings dressed for the night and finally glide past the grand old lady to our port at the southern tip of Manhattan where we were welcomed by strident supporters and our hosts, the Manhattan Sailing Club, who kindly opened their small floating bar for somewhat thirsty sailors.
New York showed us its best face during our brief visit. Glorious sunshine accompanied sightseeing, walks in the park and hours of retail therapy. Quality time was spent with family members, the food and wine consumed returned our faith in life beyond boat menus and Doris was fortunate to get a good night’s sleep in her own bed. Tiina can tell you that the same attire is required for the performance of Swann Lake as for shopping for interiors (thanks again Rudi, it was a hoot). And the girls can warmly recommend the Sex And The City tour as an excellent way to see the city, indulge in cupcakes and overpriced Cosmopolitans and clips of our favourite show.
Now on the third day of our race, we are faced with similar conditions as at the start of it, plenty of fog and little wind. We are all dangling our legs over the low side, luckily only seals have been sighted recently. Occasionally, as the fog lifts, we can see our opponents which raises our already resilient spirit. Even though our hearts and minds are focused on catching up with the leaders, our tummies are already looking forward to the culinary delights of Canada, bacon and maple syrup to mention a few, not necessary on the same plate though. And a warm bath, it is rather nippy out here!
Your dynamic duo would like to take this opportunity to say hello to Corbett and Michael and the rest of the staff at the West Cliff Inn in Santa Cruz, we are yet to find hospitality to match yours, and to our friends and loved ones for their enduring support. We like it especially when you tell us how fit and tanned we look!
Lots of love from Doris & Tiina
