Sail away, sail away, sail awayyyyyy…

Liverpool 08's Tiina and Paul inspect sail damage

On Thursday 28 February Liverpool 08 decided to tempt fate and hoist the 1.5 spinny. As always, it did not let us down. I had just been admiring its shape behind the helm when the halyard snapped and it fell, quite gracefully I might add, into the water. By midnight the whole crew were hanging over the guard wire on starboard side pulling the wretched sail, which must wish to be used for fishing instead of powering up our great lady, back on deck. The damage was surprisingly small and after a little TLC to the sewing machine from Davey P, I was well on my way patching it up with a vengeance. Following the finishing touches from Paul ‘the leech line king’ Scannell, it was soon packed away sporting a lovely hue of anti-foul blue.

And then came Friday 1 March, 0555 hours. Crimewatch was due back on deck when the boat heeled over violently and we found ourselves staring at a pole broken in two bouncing up and down and a nearly-torn Yankee 2 that needed to come down immediately. So there we were again, on the foredeck pulling down the sail frantically with winds gusting up to 45 knots. Needless to say it was hard work and my heart sank when I saw the damage. I was sure I would be spending rest of the leg down below, but this time the sail was torn beyond hand stitching apart from a few patches. Davey P is working his magic on the pole track, (how did he know to keep a piece of left over aluminium from the horseshoe bracket?) and working on joining the pole up with Ben. I am sure we’ll be poling out again in no time.

On a happier note Mikey’s up and about, usually at mealtimes, we’ve got used to hoisting up our sleeping quarters and pumping the toilet again and are merrily scoffing corn beef with spoons after a week’s hardship with chopsticks. Anna and Doris, the Lower East Side is not the same after you left and the new tenants do not believe the conspiracy theory nor appreciate the wonders of surgical spirit. The bin gets emptied more often though.

Happy belated birthday wish to my godmother Aila, I hope it was a lovely sunny day.

Looking forward to being back on deck again.

Tiina

2. Sue Haslam, Chester 03 March 2008

Tiina & Paul, I’ll bet you’ll be able to give great sail mending lessons when you get back. You are all heroes, even if Mikey is milking it for all it’s worth. Davey P was obviously a first class scout in his youth and the combination of all of you make you a force to be reckoned with. Keep it up! We are all sending you good vibes in the vain hope that will make any difference to the performance of the boat. You are making great distances despite the sails and rigging having minds of their own. Keep each other smiling. Lots of love Sue x

3. Roy Stevens, Lytham- St- Annes 03 March 2008

These things are sent to try us, or should I say you. Glad you’re keeping your sense of humour. It’s always good to hear from you. I hang on your every word.
Good luck, stay safe and knock the orange boat off the podium.

Emilio : How are you doing ? Here is freezing cold and windy , I hope is better in the Pacific . Markets are awful and most financials are fast forwarding to distressness . 11. Andres Imaz de las Alas-Pumariño, Spain 06 March 2008

Well done Liverpool, you are catching up...! You must be flying with those tale winds.
Emilio, some news, although I know you don’t care much, R. Madrid did not make it to the quarter finals of the Champions League. Roma won 2-1 in Bernabeu, the usual boring speculative footbal match they ghive us most of the time.
Three British teams are throuh, Arsenal defeated AC Milan, Chelsea and Manchester.
It is quite late here so I am going to quit for today. Have a good day crew!
Andrés

14. Tuula Kuisma, 06 March 2008

Hei Tiina,

Emilio and the rest of the Liverpool crew - praying that nothing breaks or tears again. Sending you all my positive energy for the days to come. Despite all the setbacks, the race viewer says you’re in 3rd place! Impressive! Have a great day.

17. Salaverri Jnr, Madrid 06 March 2008

Hi Emilio,
Looked at the race viewer and realized that you must be going through the deepest seas on earth, the Mariana deeps with 11 km deep. Also realized you are runing in third place!. Very impressive!. Keep up the good spirit and dont smoke too much.

18. Jake Baxter, Joensuu 07 March 2008

Yo, keep it up fellas, one jealous lil bro here typing, sounds like you’re having a blast there, hope ya keep my tiny wee (older, much older)sis occupied all the time so she wont get all lazy and slobby when you guys finally hit the shoreline. If she goes on a rampage just tie her tight to the mast with some iron wire, normal ropes aint gonna do no good for ya, trust me, I’ve got experience from it.

So, got my thumbs up here, have one helluva adventure there!

Jake B.
