Crew Blog
So Long Singapore
30 January 2008
After a very relaxing four days on the island of Batam, enjoying air conditioned rooms and sleeping under mosquito nets, drinks from the poolside bar and endless games of pool, eighties pop and Swedish massages and making sure the old girl was shipshape, Liverpool arrived in Singapore in style. Naturally we had a final “sail repair” with Eleni and I frantically mending the torn banner by hand due to the sewing machine breaking at the last minute (later found out that the needle was put in the wrong way, thanks J!). The opening of the Keppel Bay Marina was a first class event and the hospitality experienced by all of us during the stop over second to none. Week in Singapore produced a well rested crew equipped with the latest in electronics. Thanks to Mikey’s dad for organising a great crew party and thanks dad for the bubbly.
On 27th in a glorious sunshine with tummies full of chicken curry breakfast (marvellous, really!) courtesy of the marina we set sail for the race start. We were second across the line but then our progress was hindered by light airs that seemed to last forever. As we watched the others sail past our fighting spirits grew and catching up has never been so much fun. Our arch rival New York is right behind us and we intend to keep it that way!
The South China Sea has been kind to us, the weather has cooled down and due to Dave’s fan repairs and being able to keep the front hatch open, sleeping conditions in the ghetto are now close to humane. We have all learned a lot about helming and endless sail changes have caused the customary aches and pains… luckily Richard’s massage parlour is open 24/7. Anna and I have started Doris’ school of dating and will emerge as fine young ladies I’m sure.
Fishing boats, big waves and endless beating, sleet, snow and ice; whatever the next couple of weeks will throw at us, we’re ready. Qingdao, here we come!

Hello Tiina ,
Back home with the traditional flu.Toby was very pleased to get the snake. There have been the worst snow storms in eastern China since Tsingis Khan,so be prepared to live in igloos.
Also try to be first in Qsingdao as there may be difficult to find proviant for the whole fleet as trains are not moving and roads are full of snow.Enjoy the race!

So good to hear what you are up to and it sounds like you are having a ball! Glad that you are enjoying it and when you are back in Blighty I expect you to set up a sweatshop making cheap clothes and boat sails with all your sewing experience. Doris’ school of dating sounds ominous.
Sophia is starting to sleep more and is now smiling and gurgling away. We’re coping fine and hope to start the extension on the house at the start of March.
Keep on smiling little one.
Muchos hugs and love
