Broken guys and flying fish - 05 October 2007

NS Ed catches dinner 071005

The sun is shining, the breeze is slight, it’s 35 degrees and that’s just in the galley!

We are now 12 days into the trip and more than halfway to Salvador.
Currently we have just less than 2000 miles to go and are sitting in 2nd place - we lost 20 miles on 1st place overnight due to the spinnaker guy breaking yet again .We are now flying with the spinnaker aloft and have just completed a gybe almost worthy of a Yeeeeha (our boat reward system)!

Today we have had more flying fish attacks with Ed removing a stunning total of 8 from the foredeck. Both Rick and Dave took direct hits to the head. We have started a flying fishometer with the boys both leading the way with 10 points each. In addition to the fishometer we have commenced hourly flying fish search parties throughout the night with the whole deck looking like Grimsby fish market in the morning.

Today whilst interviewing the Canadians on deck there was another sighting of the Nova Scotia moose. Our wildlife spotting continued with a pod of pilot whales making an appearance just off the stern, dolphins chasing flying fish throughout the night and a whale spouting in the distance at the break of day - not to mention the odd lonely seabird cruising past.

In addition to all this excitement we’ve taken time to bake scones for
afternoon tea and the three girlies enjoyed a much needed shower on the
marlin board off the back of the boat.

We hear James Riley is still cheering us on back in Liverpool - thanks for your encouragement, it really helps us to keep going!

Well Done NS, it’s exciting watching you battle it out for 1st/2nd place.  It’s so not long for a cold beer now.  Take Care

Great to know that you Guys are having so much fun; what an experience, what an adventure! The cream must be to know that the Nova Scotia fishing fleet are cheering you on. It’s unbelievable the amount of support you are getting; I get emails and telephone calls from family and friends just wanting to talk about your experiences and urging you on with wishes of good luck.
Good sailing and good fun to all on board
