Food glorious food, hot porridge and custard

08 October 2007

Nova Scotia's Lucy takes a break from mother watch in the sweltering galley

The water temperature is 31 degrees, making our regular salt water showers off the sugar scoop at the stern of the boat extremely pleasant. In terms of temperature, this is in fact the only pleasant place on the good ship Nova Scotia. The heat on deck is becoming stifling at over 36 degrees, and below deck resembles a sauna at the best of times. A valiant effort to make a wind scoop for the sleeping area unfortunately left half the crew devoid of any air at all overnight. It was therefore quite surprising how well the regular breakfast of hot porridge and custard was received.

We are on a four-day spinnaker run to the Doldrums, with constant trimming and a dedicated team of drivers trying to keep us going in the right direction. This can be slightly tricky with the distractions of various crew members disco dancing on deck. Now that the older members of the crew have been taught the secret of making iPod playlists the music selection has become significantly more eclectic, and Roger’s dancing even more vigorous than usual.

Durban 2010 and Beyond are in our sights, only 26 miles ahead, and we are luckily maintaining distance from Glasgow: Scotland with style Clipper and the rest of the fleet behind us. We have changed the watch system to keep us out of the sun as much as possible, and are now looking forward to the next big challenge - the light airs of the Doldrums.

Great progress Guys. I’m thinking of changing my watch system as this checking the Clipper site every six hours is demanding! On reading up on Moose, I learn that they have “activity peaks during dawn and dust” does that explain some of Roger’s antics!

2. Cheryl & Roger Mendham, Bookham, Surrey 08 October 2007

We can’t believe the picture of our daughter sleeping on the job! Congratulations though Nova Scotia - once again we’ve been on the edge of our seats all weekend watching you whittle away the miles between you and your nearest competitor and this afternoon after several thousand miles the distance between you is less than our weekly shopping trip!  Keep going!!  Love from the Mendham family.

3. Lucy Robinson, Bath 08 October 2007

Lucy, was this the nap you needed after trying to keep up with the dance routines on deck, go Roger! I see from the photo you are well stocked with crisps to go with that well earned drink when you reach Salvador (hopefully you will get a few in before the rest of the fleet arrive). Hope the winds are good to you in the Doldrums. All the best to Neptune when you see him and love to Roger, Lucy

Jim

6. Terry Kemp, Heathrow Airport 09 October 2007

So that’s the secret of your success - porridge and custard.  Will have to try it at home, so that when I jump on board I am already acclimatised.  You guys are going great… keep up the excellent spinny trimming - and may Neptune smile on you as you approach the doldrums.........keep on mooooooosing. Terry

13. Katie Brudenell, farnborough 10 October 2007

Lucy - If you want to entertain us with tales of your antics on the high seas when you return you’d better start doing some sailing, or there’s a chance we might not believe you!

Well done NS - nice to see you cruising along in Durban’s slip stream - saving yourselves for a sprint finish… You can do it!!!

All the best,

Katie and Emily Brudenell xxx (Emily - 8lb13oz today - no sign of sleeping through the night, and projectile vomiting for England… winner!)

14. Jim Cronin, Bath,U.K. 10 October 2007

Come on, Roger.
Lack of wind has never been a problem for you!
Find it! Harness it! Win !
