Now don’t get us wrong, we’re not complaining about the weather at all. Far from it: it’s allowing us to go quickly towards our destination and - at the moment at least - steal a march on some of the boats whom one might more typically find at the top of the leader board. No, we’re not complaining. We just had this rose-tinted view that a voyage from Hawaii to California would involve a smooth transition from nice hot Honolulu days to the more balmy springtime of Santa Cruz.
On this occasion at least, however, the gods have decided that - in order to fully appreciate the West Coast warmth - we should first pass through some nasty grey rubbish. Solid cloud and frequent showers have been the order of the day, so we’ve pulled the hoods tight and knuckled down to some fast, straight helming.
Spirits are high with our new-found lofty position on the leaderboard, but we remain painfully aware that we’ve got around a week to go and everyone else is going to be pushing as hard as us in an attempt to secure a podium pennant. Each new grib and sched brings conferences on strategy and tactics and we’ve started marking in SeaPro each time a new helm takes over so that they can monitor their performance and strive to even better things.
We believe strongly in making our own luck - any anyway, having your fingers crossed all the time makes it difficult to trim the sails - but if you would like to hold your breath, say prayers or offer small sacrifices to a god of your choice on our behalf, we’ll appreciate your support.
