Top Tips for Sea Birds

Nova Scotia's spies another sort of seabird

One thing the old timers look forward to is the new reading material that the ‘newbies’ bring onto the boat, so whilst spending some idle mother watch time we came across a high gloss glamour magazine which provided some interesting beauty tips which would come in handy for the impending date line party this afternoon.  Unfortunately we don’t have ready access to most of the products so we have devised our own Nova Scotia Spa treatments.

Forget cleanse, exfoliate, tone and moisturise if you want to arrive on deck in time for your watch.  Instead sit on deck for three hours at a time to cleanse with sea spray, certain areas of the boat are better for this than others.  Once the sea spray has evaporated, exfoliate with the dried sea salt.  Finish your cleansing process with a baby wet wipe.  Follow up with an essential application of sun screen to maintain a milky white complexion.

If you have an extremely busy watch and don’t have time for your full beauty regime, then throw yourself onto a sail during a sail evolution and exfoliate by direct face contact.  This has the added bonus of not appearing to be wasting time on your beauty regime which earns you skipper points.

Once a week, instead of eating your daily allocation of oatmeal, save it for a deep facial treatment which can be enhanced by a honey and ginger concoction.  Leave on for ten minutes and remain in your bunk to avoid scaring your watch mates.

As for hair styles, for the day watch look, go with a double pony tails on either side (bunches).  For a little lift you can go for the life preserver Velcro back comb look.  For the evening, the general hair accessory is a toque or woolly hat.  The less adventurous ones among us go for the low maintenance no-wash routine which is renowned for natural conditioning and self cleaning, but so far all followers of this regime report only uncomfortable side effects.  The more daring among us have used coarse sea salt treatments with shampoo and conditioner for a more cosmopolitan look.

For hand and nail care, moisturise frequently with antibacterial solution and keep nails ship shape by using a spike to clean under nails and shape cuticles.  For foot treatment, simply ensure you keep the same socks on for at least a week and place three or four times a day in soggy sea boots keep feet moist.

To put your best face forward, day makeup consists of lip balm.  An evening look can be accomplished with a black balaclava under the cover of darkness.

For the boy’s regime, we are told there isn’t one, but they seem to go
through an inordinate amount of wet wipes and talcum powder.

Well that’s about it for now as we have to go and clear the bilges before we can attend the date line party but at least we will look out best for the occasion.

Enjoy the date line party!!!

p.s The “another sort of sea bird” in the photo (I think) is a black-footed albatross, they are common in the North Pacific and have their colonies in the North-western Hawaiian islands, such as Midway, the one you just passed.

Best wishes to all the crew, enjoy your date line party!
Speaking from experience, sounds like ‘Nessie’ has somewhat improved his beauty regimen, I can’t believe it, wet wipes AND talcum powder!!! I assure the rest of the crew you are all highly privileged.
Andy, I’ve had the industrial cleaners in while you’re at sea, they did their best but unfortunately were not qualified to tackle your room, they said they would have to get a specialist in chaos theory in just to get a quote.
Don’t worry, haven’t sold your surfboard or bike yet, but I’m missing rent for Jan and March even though have received it for Feb.
Don’t know how in touch you guys and gals are with the latest news but the today there was a lovely story about a dolphin in New Zealand who helped two stranded whales back to sea, absolutely amazing.

Lots of Love

You have me sold on the sea spray-sounds decadent.  You guys should bottle that-you could make a fortune.  Straight to the shower for you Sue when you get to Santa Cruz-you know how weak my stomache is-ha ha.  Hawaii’s getting close-I bet you can almost taste the burgers of paradise.  We’re all thinking about you-lots of love!  Steph
