Clearing Finisterre
26 September 2007
After a day and night of hard charging into the wind, close hauled (with the corresponding heavy lean of the our boat while we pounded through waves), this morning started off with a calmer broad reach, moving slightly downwind. By midafternoon we had raised the heavyweight spinaker. At sunset we gybed the spinaker, taking us from a heading of 240 degrees to 180, due south. By the time the gybe was completely and we had finished and tidied up all the lines, it was dark and a full moon had risen. Dolphins were visible in the moonlight as they jumped near us from time to time.
This spinaker gype signified a key point in the voyage for us, for it meant that we’ve cleared Finisterre (Land’s End) on the northwest coast of Spain and now we have nothing but water between us and Brazil.
It seems we’d only just left La Rochelle but now we’ve already finished 10% of the distance. The slow run through the doldrums further south, however, means we have more than 90% of the duration left.

You are all doing great. To gybe due south today I think will pay off. How are you doing Jean? Embrace everything!!! It will be over before you know it. Keep up the good work.

Go Singapore, Go Go Go
Watch out team, the Sweaty Socks are right behind you. Great video, Howard, of the early hours tea break - was almost sea sick watching the effort and the movement of the boat.
Good sailing, keep it up.

Hi Philip
Hope you are remembering to enjoy this as well as working hard. We are all watching your progress, waiting for each update. Thinking of you and all the crew.
At least at sea Steven would not get in other boats way (remember B. R.)
Take care of yourself

Who wrote this blog then? Sounds very technical! From the picture it looks like this is a cruise ship!!! You certainly look in better health Daniel than you did making tea during rough seas on the video!
