Crew Blog
In the picture now
02 May 2008
Having just joined the race after following it on daily basis for the last seven months, I saw a lot of pictures, video clips and read a lot of blogs about life on board.
This generated a lot of pictures and thoughts in my head to try and anticipate what it would be like. The pictures of sun blessed people on deck, on the helm, or working below and above deck were intriguing and I wondered what it would be like to become part of this, what it would be like to be in the picture rather than just looking at it.
Having been at sea for just over a week now, I have well and truly become part of this picture.
All these videos and snapshots are great to be in but for me it is more important to be in the ‘bigger picture,’ the one that we can’t see and that will remain in my head much longer than any photograph. This bigger picture is the undertaking of a group of people to achieve a common goal to move this boat across the water as safely and fast as possible. The learning curve for the newcomer is steep but I have been met with smiles and patience alongside with encouragement and guidance.
The bigger picture is also to rediscover the basic principles of human behaviour and interdependency which we often lose in our busy lives on land. The boat philosophy, as far as I see it, is striving to remind us every day of those basic needs to interact with each other in a human way. This bigger picture will be the most important one that I will come away with and will remember when the race is over.
A big hello to everyone, especially Debra and Tony Povey, two people who have been my rock in the planning of this adventure. A big hello also to Jordan in Baltimore (please reply to my e mail).
A few words in German: Viele Gruesse an alle Freunde und Verwandten in Deutschland von meinem grossen Abenteuer. Drueckt mir weiterhin die Daumen das alles weiterhin gut laeuft.
So long
Jurgen

Jurgen, Hope you enjoy your adventure, as much as those before you.
This leg of the race seems to be the closest yet, with 1st. 2nd. 3rd.& 4th. positions
changing daily and the rest of the fleet pushing hard, just behind. Very Exciting.
Crew of UNIQULEY SINGAPORE great going. Keep Competitive, Keep Safe & God Speed.

Moin Juergen!
Mast- und Schotbruch und immer ne Handbreit Schnaps im Glas! Schade, dass das mit dem Klassentreffen bei Dir nicht klappt.
Aber es gibt eben Dinge, die sind einfach besser…
