Reflecting on the race

27 June 2008

Uniquely Sinagpore performs essential headsail repairs

Now that we are on the last leg of the race, with less than a few days of sailing to Cork, Ireland, these questions have been going through my mind;

What will I miss about this adventure?

I will miss the simplicity of life onboard, where we eat, sleep and breathe sailing; having a common destination, and working together with a like-minded and motivated crew with a common focus towards arriving at that destination. In my opinion, that is a powerful thing, being part of a functional team, where the whole is bigger than the sum of its parts.

Moreover, I will miss the people onboard. There is something about doing tough things together that bonds people. We have eaten, slept and sailed together for months, all in the confines of a 68 foot yacht. Apart from the sailing, I have learned so many other things from my fellow crew; astronomy, maritime history, marine life and just life in general. This leaves me hungry for more knowledge!

What are my thoughts now that we are nearing the end?

First of all, I will like to thank my employer, Keppel Group for giving me the opportunity to participate in this race. It has been a great and enriching experience. On a personal level, I feel that I have developed a more global perspective, having sailed and interacted with people from different nationalities and cultures. I am looking forward to going back home to start a new phase of my life and my new posting in Keppel.

Also, in every single one of the port stopovers, I have seen first hand how Keppel’s sponsorship of the Uniquely Singapore boat on this Round the World Yacht Race has raised the profile of not only Keppel as an organisation but Singapore as a country.

Hey Kok Siong,

Time really flies… It seems like yesterday we were discussing over a beer at Vivo City whether you should take up the opportunity to carry on with the sailing trip and now you are coming to the end of this chapter now!

Looking forward to your return! And thanks for making Singapore proud!

Well done, what an achievement, one that you and your crew will never forget.  Plenty of Becks awaits you!!  A bit disappointed though, didn’t see you in you grass skirt in Hawaii!!!  Is it Everest next or Sea of Tranquillity?  Did you keep a tally of all crew you threw overboard? Look forward to seeing you.  Well done to you again and to all your crew. Taff X
