The deep blue sea

US Leg1 Race2 Day2 070924

Uniquely Singapore blog
28 September 2007
162 miles NNW of Maderia

The deep blue sea, blue yes, several have remarked on the colour today the conclusion is that it is royal blue according to Anna and Marlena, although it has a light hue and richness rarely seen in the UK. And yes it’s deep 2659 mtrs so you’d need water wings. We are ambling along at 8nts in mere 10 knots of breeze, with clear blue skies and bright sun and at night under the silveriest of moons and our only company are the dolphins. We are in a chasing group behind the leaders in fifth pace, though a forecast of changing winds will mean a tactical decision needs to be made as the fleet skirts Madeira. Our decisions are made after a group discussion into which Bob, Mark and I feed data but in the end as Terry says it’s the wind which decide for us. Although Mark the skipper says we are in a race to the car park that is the doldrums from where the wind gods will decide. As we track south each log entry goes with the thought this is the furthest south and west most of us have ever sailed and each day personal bests for passage distances are achieved. The logbook reads 1114 miles from La Rochelle nearly a quarter of the way and it’s hard to believe that we only set off 5 days ago. Dan and I are mothers today - spag bol for lunch and couscous with veg for supper - except there is no fresh veg left! The first two showers were taken today Ian and Hizam! But I couldn’t smell them as I’ve got the boat cold and the loudest sneeze!

Hi Philip

Hope you are ok and the race is going well? I’m afraid Arsenal got the better of West Ham this weekend - I didn’t expect anything else really smile Keep up the good work.

Cheers,

Luke

To all on US, keep up the good work.  You are gaining on the leaders.  FYI, the Rugby quarter-final line up is Oz vs England, SA vs Fiji, NZ vs France and Scotland vs Argentina. We’ll keep you posted on the results.

6. Ian Forshew, London 30 September 2007

Hi Anna,
Just read the blog - royal blue it is then!  I guess in future I’ll have to ‘bow to your greater knowledge’ and agree to all things with regard the sea and sailing!
Great to see the regular scheds and to plot your progress - you’re there, or there abouts, and I’m confident that the fleet needs to watch for Uniquely Singapore.  Good luck to all on board, good winds, keep safe and love from the ‘old folks’.

7. Annette Pursey, Buckingham 30 September 2007

Can’t believe you are a quarter of the way there already! Doing really well! We are having a nice break from Dan’s spag bol and couscous, but I’m sure you guys will be enjoying it as new victims - just as well he isn’t going round the world!!!

8. Beccy, Swansea. South Wales 01 October 2007

9. George Clover, Crediton, Devon 01 October 2007

The good old spag bol! Well done PJT! Making great progress and I can’t believe how close everyone is to each other. Everytime I look at the race viewer we see changes and can’t wait for the next update. Just so you know England are playing Oz on friday night in the RWC, qtr final. Wales are out, Ireland are out, scotland through too. So proud of all of the crews and go Singers, g and family. x

10. Sally Herbert-Jones, Shropshire 01 October 2007

Was it wise to let Ian shower first! He is a bit of a shower addict at home so there may be precious little water left for the rest of you!! Keep having fun, thinking of you all, special love to Ian, Sally and kidsxxxxx
