Uniquely Singapore’s language school
31 January 2008
It seems a little like Ground Hog Day. We’re continuing north and then east, north and then east, beating into a gentle swell. Every so often we do a head sail change, but life is fairly stable on Uniquely Singapore. Everyone has got well settled into the watches and there is a definite rhythm to things. That’s what makes it feel like every day is the same at the moment. It’s hot and sunny and the sailing is very pleasant even though we are beating, which is a relative novelty. We have also found out that our easterly position in the fleet has meant we have crept up to fifth – again another novelty.
We have a number of Mandarin speakers on board so to pass the time we’ve been learning Mandarin in anticipation of our arrival in China. We’re at the stage of learning useful words like “beer” (Pi Jiu) and phrases like, “How much?” (Hen Gui). I’m sure we’ll have enough of an understanding in the near future to deeply offend people by accident. A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing in the hands of a Clipper crew.

Wow US what are they putting in your porridge? Maybe you’re making it Scottish style. Guess you’ve got enough salt out there. Keep going, keep smiling and good luck with the Mandarin...Sarah x
