Coincidence???

20 April 2008

Birthday celebrations with Clive and Jaqui on westernaustralia2011.com

We are at it again, celebrating more birthdays that is - Billy & Jacki’s.

We’ve a relatively small group of people involved as crew on westernaustralia2011.com but we have so many double ups or very close birthdates, even amongst our core RTWs.  Today Billy & Jacki, Martin, Jude & Eileen share a day in June, Bruce & Clive just days apart in early January, Pete & myself 2 days apart Sept/Oct, Johnboy & Lou days apart in March/April, Jack & Chrissy late Aug, Brian T & Chris same day in May!

Coincidence, I ask you, or is there really something to like personalities / birthdates?

After our dismasting I started to read “A Voyage for Madmen” about the initial attempt in 1968/9 to sail solo around the world non-stop, which was won by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston.  Sitting up in bed reading on our first morning on Midway Island the next page to read was about Carozzo one of the race entrants who’d several years earlier been dismasted sailing from Japan to California, he’d also stopped over on Midway for repairs – coincidence? It’s part of my journey!

As a novice sailor when I’d committed to joining this race I underestimated just what is involved with racing around the world, adventurism or just sheer naivety, i still can’t decide.  However now having sailed more than half way around the world, experienced dramatic equipment damage; differing personalities, life is sometimes just being in the right place at the right time.  Speaking of which, I’m off to join the celebrations!!

C ya, till next time.

Jacks, Billy Happy birthday !! I can see you guys are almost there and soon will be re-entering the race. I am incredibly proud of belonging to a team that was able to pull together so well after loosing the mast. Next race, back to the scheds tactics and speed ! Good luck !!

2. Adrian 'Big Brother' Silk, London 23 April 2008

I see you’ve arrived in Santa Cruz! I hope you don’t get too confused between arrival and departure? Straight from chequered flag to start, yeah? Hope you’ve time to grab a beer, although you’ll need your passport here even if you’ve got a grandson you’ll need to prove you’re twenty-one. Good luck Big Blue for the the next race, do try and keep on the pace to Panama, it’s not too far, on the Race Viewer about a day? Although I’ve zoomed out most of the way! See you all soon(ish) in New York City. Here’s hoping the weather’s nice.

Midway, full moon 20 April 2008. I had the second experience of enjoying the full moon effect of on Midway. It is quite special as it is so clear because the moonlight reflect off the sandy beach. The best spot I found is behind the Clipper House. I write about this because because my initial Midway full moon experience was during the visit by your amazing crew. So there were a few less thrills this time but still very exciting. What is the full moon effect while you are at sea. How enjoyable is it or does it offer any distraction I pondered.
I often think of you guys, your voyage and adventures. It was a great pleasure and joy having you on the Island. The stay was much too short but there was that racing task at hand so I understand the speedy deparure. Hope you keep a strong wind at your back and clear sailing ahead. Much Love and Joy from Midway. Bravo 4809
