Preparation week
15 September 2007
westernaustralia2011.com enjoyed a wonderful week in Liverpool, making the most of their final few days on land before the start of their epic adventure. The crew put in plenty of hard work onboard the boat, which was duly rewarded with time to enjoy the local culture.
Everyone’s been extremely busy on the boat servicing winches, clutches, engines and generators, sewing everything in sight, repairing stays, checking the rigging, re-fitting a new luxury galley, stowing all the food away and re-fuelling our water and gas tanks not to mention all the work that has gone into discussing the weather, navigation and tactics.
On Wednesday, the boat was inundated with excited children from the local schools who will be following us throughout our voyage. After much searching, and to their great surprise, some of the pupils even discovered a pirate hiding in the bunks. Their enthusiasm was infectious and they were keen to learn the “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie” cheer ready for the race start. Let’s hope we can hear them on Sunday!
Team bonding was taken to new heights later in the week when the whole crew visited a climbing wall. Some of the more experienced climbers were able to do impressions of Spiderman as they scaled up the walls and even Freddie, the ship’s cat, made it to the top. The crew then explored the city, taking in the odd hostelry and China Town.
The boat and crew are almost ready for their 35,000 mile voyage and with all the hard work that’s gone into the additions, amendments, and team preparations WA is in an great position to defend their title.
