Weather watching
03 October 2007
So begins another day and we have finally and very patiently gone south of the Canaries in our endeavours to reach Salvador. The wind cannot make up its mind which way to blow, nor if it wants to blow at all. We want to go one way so it goes another, and this, as I understand it, is the fun and uncertainty of sailing.
Infinitely slowly those islands disappeared over our stern horizon and we are free of their gravity. Mobile phones have gone below and once more, we feel alone with the elements and concentrate on getting south where the real Doldrums are playing hide and seek. The sky is a scattered mass of dark, water-filled clouds with flashes of blue between, and we are attempting to find wind under their bellowing fury.
Waste disposal follows our trail having two ways to go; the environmentally green stuff which remains uneaten can go over the side to feed the waiting shoals. Plastics and other non-degradable material finds its way into deep storage in the lazerette; not a particularly pleasant place to visit!
Relationships between things on board have become very apparent, especially people, their habits, vessel cleanliness (hygiene) and light entertainment (when we’re winning). We have gelled together, formed a rule of living and enabled things to find a sort of loose balance.
We on westernaustralia2011.com, a happily balanced, motley crew, are eagerly awaiting the elements to kick in and come to the party, so that we can truly let this racing machine have its legs and carry us to the real Doldrums and beyond.

Thanks mothers (and others?) for the insightful blogs - I am also checking what you are up to whenever I can get access to the internet!! (I am currently travelling in France.. where Australia play England in the Rugby quarter finals this weekend)
Great to see the photos too. Must be so frustrating trying to keep up the speed with varying winds.
Keep safe and sound. Hugs too Anne

Hi Jadranka, no your not. I’m only an ‘interested party’ so to speak, but I have met Jack. Although you would never get me sailing the world on a stick it’s got me hooked and I check on WA in the morning and evening.
