The question of "who takes part in the Clipper Races?" always gets an interesting response due to the diversity of its competitors. No experience necessary! Young and old, male or female, at Clipper we encourage people from all walks of life to take part in the adventure!

Skipper

Hannah Jenner

Age 26, Professional Skipper

Hannah Jenner, 26, has been announced as the skipper of Glasgow: Scotland with style Clipper. This will be the Scottish city’s fourth Clipper Race campaign, and Hannah is determined to steer them to a podium position in Liverpool in July 2008. The fact that she is the only female skipper won’t slow her down.

“I use it as an advantage,” says Hannah. “Other skippers quite often write you off and won’t see you coming because they’re busy concentrating on other people. I definitely want to win and beat the boys!”

Lisa Duffin

Age 30, Supply Chain Consultant

Lisa, a supply chain consultant from Coleraine, Northern Ireland, now living in London, is taking a sabbatical from her job to compete as a round the worlder. She had always seen sailing as a social thing before. “This is something else again. I’m not just doing it in the hope of winning, I’m doing it for the personal challenge,” she explains.

She has strong connections with the city she is representing on the race having studied for a business management degree at Glasgow University during which time she was a Scout leader with the 1st Glasgow troop in the West End, so she is really pleased to be a member of the crew on Glasgow: Scotland with style Clipper.

Gordon Lawson

Age 50, Finance Director

Originally from Perth, Scotland, now living in Edinburgh, Gordon is the Finance Director for MacDonald Estates Plc. The father of two followed the progress of the Clipper 05-06 Race, which fired his enthusiasm.

He says, “It is not often we have the opportunity to challenge ourselves. This is definitely the real McCoy. Sailing in a race around the world with a team of like minded, highly motivated people provides a unique chance to see how you can cope outside your comfort zone. The initial training has been an eye opener, tough but great fun. I have already met lots of people who I am sure will become life long friends over the next 10 months. I can’t wait to get going.”

Gordon, in common with many of his fellow crew members, is using his experience to raise money for a good cause and his chosen one is Maggie’s Centres an organisation supporting anybody who has, or who has had cancer. They are also for their families, their friends and their carers.
