The question of "who takes part in the Clipper Races?" always gets an interesting response due to the diversity of its competitors. No experience necessary! Young and old, male or female, at Clipper we encourage people from all walks of life to take part in the adventure!

Skipper

Danny Watson

Age 36, Professional Skipper

Hull & Humber’s debut entry in the Clipper 07-08 Race will be skippered by experienced yachtsman, Danny Watson. “In May I was fortunate enough to be the delivery skipper of Hull&Humber for her naming ceremony in Hull Marina. We also took her over to Grimsby for a visit and I was impressed by the overwhelming support the people have for the race on both sides of the river. I’m honoured to now act as an ambassador for the region,” says Danny.

The 36-year old from Beckenham, Kent, UK, brings with him a considerable amount of experience having circumnavigated the globe in the Clipper 05-06 Race. Appointed as a Race Skipper for a second time, he is keen to share his knowledge and experiences with his colleagues. “The decision to do this again was not one I took lightly,” says Danny. “Being a skipper on a race like this takes a considerable amount of dedication and commitment, but it’s a challenge I’m looking forward to.”

Hisayasu Jin

Age 59, Naval Architect

Hisayasu will just have celebrated his 60th birthday when he takes part in the Clipper 07-08 Round the World Yacht Race and has been inspired by the progress of his countryman, Kojiro Shiraishi, who finished in second place in the solo VELUX 5 OCEANS event. When one of Hisayasu’s daughters saw an advert for the Clipper Race at a London Tube station, she told her father, an experienced sailor who lives in Funabashi-Shi, Japan, that he too could take part in some serious ocean racing and he had no hesitation in signing up.

“Sailing has been a big part of my life for 40 years and it has been my dream to sail across an ocean,” says Hisayasu, a naval architect and ship surveyor. Born in Sendai, Japan, Hisayasu lived in London for several years. “I’m familiar with working in an international environment, so I don’t think it will be too hard getting on with people from other countries who’ll be with me on the boat,” he says. “As long as my English can be understood, I think it will be good fun!”
