The question of "who takes part in the Clipper Races?" always gets an interesting response due to the diversity of its competitors. No experience necessary! Young and old, male or female, at Clipper we encourage people from all walks of life to take part in the adventure!

Skipper

Simon Bradley

Age 50, Professional Skipper

The elder statesman of the Clipper 07-08 Race Skippers is 50-year-old Simon Bradley. Although this will be his second circumnavigation, he has only been sailing professionally since 2003.

Having sailed as a hobby for many years, at the turn of the millennium Simon resigned from his job of 20 years in order to compete in the Times Clipper 2000 Race. He was a watch leader on Bristol Clipper, completing the whole circumnavigation as part of the winning crew.

“I wouldn’t have considered it if the route and the boats had been the same as the last time I did it,” says Simon. “These boats are much bigger than the ones we raced in the Clipper 2000 Race and of the 14 ports we’re visiting on this race, I only went to three of them - New York, Hawaii and Salvador – the first time round.”

More people have climbed Everest than have raced around the world, so Simon is part of a very select group.

Crew Profiles

John Braithwaite

Age 32, Project Manager

Taking part in the Clipper 07-08 Round the World Yacht race is realising an ambition I had when I first set sail in a yacht in 2003, says John. After a week of sailing out of Plymouth I knew I wanted to sail the oceans of the world. It felt impossible at the time, now I know it’s possible, I just need to do it. With the crew of Jamaica I know we can do it!

John, who lives in Staffordshire, is a project manager for Argos. He is looking forward to meeting amazing people – not just his fellow crew members but those he will encounter in the host ports around the world. “This is an opportunity to learn from and work with a fantastic group of people to achieve the ambition of a lifetime,” he says.

Bernard Tissier

Age 52, IT Specialist

IT specialist Bernard will fulfil a long-held ambition to sail around the world when he competes in Clipper 07-08. He first heard about the race in 1999 and the seed was firmly planted, but circumstances didn’t allow him to take part then.

“I decided to enter the race in mid-2005 and followed the last one on a daily basis, even going to Liverpool to see them off,” he says. “My partner gave me her full backing, saying I’d regret it if I didn’t fulfil this particular ambition. I must also give thanks to my mother, as the money she left me in her will gave me the financial wherewithal to turn my dream into a reality.

“Sailing around the world will be an awesome achievement; but the lasting legacy will be the bonds of friendship formed with my skipper, crew and crews from the other yachts.”
