The question of "who takes part in the Clipper Races?" always gets an interesting response due to the diversity of its competitors. No experience necessary! Young and old, male or female, at Clipper we encourage people from all walks of life to take part in the adventure!

Skipper

Ben Galloway

Age 26, Professional Skipper

Liverpool 08 Clipper will be skippered by Ben Galloway, 26, from Wrexham. Ben learned to sail with his father in North Wales and is now a self-confessed competitive yachtsman who has made sailing and racing big boats his hobby, as well as his career.

“It’s fantastic news that I’ve been selected to skipper Liverpool 08 Clipper,” says a delighted Ben. “Liverpool is my favourite city and it will be great to sail back in at the end of the race when it is the European Capital of Culture. I have a lot of friends there and my godparents are from the Wirral. I always try to visit the city whenever I’m home in Wrexham,” he adds.

Lisa Pover

Age 26, Hackney Taxi Driver

Lisa won her place on a leg of the race in a competition run by Liverpool Culture Company and since completing her Clipper training she has worked tirelessly to raise sponsorship to compete on more of the race. Now the hackney cab driver from Liverpool, who had only ever spent a few hours on a catamaran before launching herself into the Clipper experience with a vengeance, will be taking part on five of the seven legs.

She’s ecstatic. “I’m really excited about this whole experience, I was just driving a cab a few months ago, now I’m gonna be sailing across the Pacific, Christmas in Oz… I’m waiting for the catch!”

William Little

Age 19, Student

When Will, a student from Wallasey, Merseyside, was left some inheritance money he knew exactly what he wanted to spend it on. “I have been a keen dinghy sailor from the age of eight and have worked my way up through the ranks and I’m now a qualified RYA Dinghy instructor,” he says. “Having watched the Clipper Race leaving the Mersey at the start of the last couple of races I have dreamt of being part of it, but thought I would have to be older than I am to compete. I was delighted when I found out that you only had to be 18 prior to the start of the race.”

Getting together the money for his great adventure presented Will with his first challenge. He had to give a presentation to explain how he was going to use the funds he’d been left for something that would be life changing. In addition to his inheritance he has raised the cash with car boot sales and West Cheshire Sailing Club, of which he is a member, has also helped him to raise the money to follow his dream.
