The question of "who takes part in the Clipper Races?" always gets an interesting response due to the diversity of its competitors. No experience necessary! Young and old, male or female, at Clipper we encourage people from all walks of life to take part in the adventure!

Robert McInally

Age 35, Professional Skipper

I convinced my father that sending me to private school was a bad idea and managed to negotiate a trade off: private school for a sailing dinghy, put it in the water and that was that. 11 years old.

He was in the Merchant Navy and my grandfather on my mother’s side was in the royal navy.

Paul MacGillivary

Age 54, Marine Safety Specialist

Marine Safety Specialist, Paul owned a 23-foot yacht in the 80s and is no stranger to the sea. He’s taking part in Clipper 07-08 because he is looking for a new physical challenge and this, for him, is a long-held dream.

Living in close confines with a group of up to 17 other people will be a challenge, as will not being able to indulge in one of his favourite pastimes, walking. But, says Paul, “I believe I will grow spiritually, emotionally and as a human being. I look forward to meeting new people, new lands, new cultures. I know there will be many highs and lows but I hope the hardest thing will be leaving everyone in the end.” He continues, The biggest challenge for most people is giving themselves permission to do this—and not be talked out of it. Where there is a will, there’s a way: Money, job and the nay-sayers are no problem!

Lucy Mendham

Age 31, Doctor

2000 was an important year for Lucy. Not only did she qualify as a doctor, she also waved off a friend on a round the world yacht race and ever since then has been itching to take part in one herself. She has been sailing dinghies in Chichester harbour for six years and following round the world yacht races with the dream of one day taking part.

She was finally persuaded by something that might have put off a less adventurous person. “When working in Portsmouth Accident and Emergency department I looked after two casualties of Clipper Training – and meeting them and their skippers inspired me to sign up for four legs of the Clipper 07-08 Race. Let the adventure begin!”
