The question of "who takes part in the Clipper Races?" always gets an interesting response due to the diversity of its competitors. No experience necessary! Young and old, male or female, at Clipper we encourage people from all walks of life to take part in the adventure!

Skipper

Mark Preedy

Age 35, Professional Skipper

Mark Preedy, 35, from Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset, UK, has also been appointed as a Race Skipper for the second time, having stepped in as a relief skipper halfway through the Clipper 05-06 Race. He took that decision having been assured it would not affect his chances of becoming a Clipper 07-08 Race Skipper, which has been his goal for some years.

Mark, 35, has already become quite attached to his new charge, Uniquely Singapore Clipper, having skippered her to events in Scotland, the Isle of Man and Dublin, as well as the ceremony last month at St Katharine Docks in London to mark the launch of this campaign.

“I am very proud to be chosen to be the Skipper of Uniquely Singapore,” says Mark. “It is so exciting to be associated with such a forward-looking nation, and I can’t wait to sail into the fantastic new Marina@Keppel Bay when the fleet stops over in Singapore.”

Hizam Haiyon

Age 35, Assistant Engineering Manager

Sponsored by Keppel Corporation, the multi-national company he has worked for for 12 years, Hizam is the only Singaporean competing on the whole circumnavigation. The assistant section manager, engineering, in the Keppel FELS division is currently studying for a Masters degree. He is a real action man, having scaled the heights of Mount Kinabalu in Malaysia, Mount Halasan in Korea and Ta’al volcano in the Philippines as well as enjoying kayaking and canoeing.

Marlena Kniestedt

Age 31, Mental Health Worker

A Dutch/American mental health worker from Swansea, Marlena has the perfect multi-national credentials for life on board Uniquely Singapore. Her only sailing experience before signing up for her round the world adventure was five days of training with Global Challenge. Now after four weeks of intensive Clipper pre-race training she is following in the footsteps of her sister who became one of a very select group of circumnavigators when she raced around the world three years ago.
