The question of "who takes part in the Clipper Races?" always gets an interesting response due to the diversity of its competitors. No experience necessary! Young and old, male or female, at Clipper we encourage people from all walks of life to take part in the adventure!

Martin Silk

Age 38, Professional Skipper

Martin Silk, 38, from Australia has been selected as the skipper of westernaustralia2011.com Clipper. The Western Australian entry won the Clipper 05-06 Race so Mark has the unenviable task of building a team to retain the prestigious Clipper Trophy.

“I can’t wait to meet my crew and get on with the challenge of retaining the trophy,” says Martin, who is also looking forward to the stopover in Fremantle, Western Australia, where the crews will spend Christmas before restarting the race on New Year’s Day 2008. “Fremantle has already proved itself as an excellent host port for the Clipper Race and it would make a great location for the ISAF Sailing World Championships,” he adds.

Lyn Condratoff

Age 50, House Renovator

Lyn Condratoff from Warragul has re-invented herself more times than fellow Victorian, Kylie Minogue! Having just taken a sabbatical to renovate a house, she has worked in accountancy, credit management, retail management and adventure tourism. Now she is embarking on a massive adventure of her own.

She first heard about the race on the radio earlier this year when Crew Recruitment Manager, David Cusworth, was touring Australia on the hunt for crew from Down Under. “It was destiny!” exclaimed Lyn. “On Australia Day this year I got caught up in the excitement at the end of the sailing race from Melbourne to Geelong and I thought at the time how fantastic it would be to do something like that.” When she heard David talking about the Clipper Race on the radio she realised she could do it herself – even though her sailing experience was limited to holding the wheel in an old cruise ship 20 years ago!

Stuart Sim

Age 50, IT Project Manager

Father of two Stuart, an IT project manager with Barclays Bank, is aiming to raise £35,000 as a result of his participation in the race. His efforts are in aid of the New Hope Children’s Centre, an orphanage in Kenya that is also supported by Barclays. The money would help meet the cost of a new school. Stuart saw posters advertising the race on the tube and was hooked. “I have lots of sailing under my belt,” he says, “but this is something else – ten months sailing around the world!

I want to be able to look back on my life and seize all the opportunities that have come my way – and I’d recommend others to do the same.”
