“This is a major milestone in the creation of our exciting new ocean racing fleet,” said Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Clipper Race founder and Chairman. “We are looking forward to starting our own  trials on the Clipper 70 in UK waters next month. Its rugged racing design looks set to deliver great performance.”

A second yacht is nearing completion and is due to ship later this month. There is a continuous rolling programme of hull and deck moulding, using vacuum infusion, with the fitting of larger components taking place internally before the decks are bonded on and deck hardware installed. The final hull of the initial order for twelve yachts will be completed by the end of the year.

The new Clipper Race fleet of 70-foot ocean racing yachts will form the world’s biggest matched fleet of large ocean racers. There is an option to build a further four. The Clipper 70 has been designed by Tony Castro Naval Architects based on the UK south coast.

The full fleet of Clipper 70s will enter service to support Level 3 training which takes place after  the Clipper 13-14 Race Crew Allocation. It will service the biennial Clipper Race programme through to 2020.
