Before we get to today's blog, everyone onboard would like to pass their condolences to Simon's family as well as Skipper Andy and his crew. They are in our thoughts and we wish that the rest of their passage be safe.

Hi all Dare to Lead followers,

Time for reflection as we enter the Ocean Sprint with just over 1,000NM to go before destination arrival.

This will be my last blog as I will be leaving the boat after signing up for leg 3 only. I have been struggling over the last few days with a sore throat and head cold, the crew and watch have been great keeping me supplied with Lemsips (other brands available) and throat lozenges from Dale!

It was suggested by my wife and daughters that a personal log of the leg should be kept and I will use notes from this to summarise the leg.

Southern Ocean

A brutal place slate grey skies and seas with unrelenting wind, it's cold, damp and unwelcoming. Just what I had expected.

Life on board Dare to Lead

Routine, routine, routine, clothes permanently damp but pleased to report that the suggested method of drying (placing damp clothes in your sleeping bag) does actually work. You just need to be careful where you place things. I lost a favourite beanie hat bought by my daughters which I found on the next watch (6 hours later) stuffed down the cycling shorts I was wearing!

Watch highlights include Mick's interpretation of the Beatles' white album and Sello's local African melodies as well as his fitness classes.

Wildlife

On the whole disappointing – the list includes a small pod of dolphins (2 days out from Cape Town), Albatross (common and wandering), storm petrels and sheer-waters with a couple of sail fish. Mid-Southern Ocean was very sparse.

All my love to Jill and my daughters Hayley and Chloe missing you loads!
