I signed up for Leg 3, the Southern Ocean, because I was curious of what it's like; the Roaring Forties, the southern sleigh ride. It sure lives up to its expectations with rough weather and heavy seas, although we've had surprisingly much head winds and less “sleigh ride” conditions so far.

My tasks on deck are usually at the bow (from the mast and forward) including e.g. lifting head sails up and down from the sail locker, preparing them for hoisting, sweating (hoisting) head sails and spinnakers, reefing the main sail, and calling sail trim. All of these tasks are done together with other crew members. Almost no task on deck is performed by yourself alone. Racing these boats is a true team effort. And it's hard, very hard work.

I take my hat off to all ocean racers of the world, amateurs and professionals alike. This is an extreme endurance sport. In this game, man does not dictate the terms of play. It is Mother Nature who sets the rules, and man has to adapt as best they can, as a team and individual. It is a relentless struggle.

Before going back up on deck, I would like to wish my daughter Ella a very happy birthday! :) Look forward to see you all soon!

All the best,

Klas
