As we sailed under the sweltering sun outside Mexico trying to make the boat faster, so that we could beat Unicef through Gate 2, we checked to see if we had done everything possible. Best helmsman at the wheel. Check. Sails trimmed. Check. Navigation and weather. Check. People on the high side. Check. The only option left was to lighten the boat.

Empty propane bottle (let’s see if it floats) 30 lbs.

Damaged Code 3 (take the eight points race committee ) 120 lbs.

Stormjib and trisail (has anyone used these?) 100 lbs.

Emergency hatch covers (see above) 110 lbs.

Two of the three life rafts (just one can hold the entire crew) 300 lbs.

One foreguy on the boom and the centre foreguy (two seems redundant and it saves time when we gybe) 20 lbs.

Industrial sized can of olives (olives are yucky) 5 lbs.

Everything that is spare on the boat (nothing ever breaks or goes wrong) 1000 lbs.

Running back stays (confusing to use and the mast is pretty strong already) 40 lbs.

Spare water (we have a bullet proof desalinator) 200 lbs.

Extra diesel (we’re a sailing boat) 200 lbs.

Toilet paper (everyone brought wet wipes) 25 lbs.

Safety equipment and supplies (someone's navy will save us) 500 lbs.

All personal gear and clothes more than a 10 litre drybag (we only wear one outfit anyways) 700 lbs.

Foulies (it’s too hot out to need them) 100 lbs.

Bob (that guy doesn’t pull his weight) 80 lbs.

ALL OVERBOARD

Total weight saved: 3730 lbs.

Total speed gained: .01 knots

Totally worth it.
