Race 5 - Day 3
Crew Diary - Race 5 Day 3: Sydney to Hobart

Learning the local lingo
Hello dear readers. Greetings from HotelPlanner.com and her crew.
We had a few exciting days of downwind sailing and lots of practice wooling and hoisting spinnakers to trying to catch up with the rest of the fleet. As I am typing this, we are approaching Snobby's Rock and now have a few of the other Clipper boats popping up on our radar. The wind has died somewhat so we currently have the windseeker up.
Before the set off from Sydney, we had a little Christmas get-together organised by Greg G and family which was amazing. Secret Santa presents were exchanged and for some reasons mine was a pocket dictionary of the local lingo otherwise known as 'Aussie Slang'. Secret Santa is always a bit of a gamble so I was quite happy with mine.
So I am using the downtime to extend my vocabulary. So what have I learned so far?
A dingbat, which is an eccentric or mildly crazy person. Luckily, we don't have any dingbats on board!
Flicking through the pages, I came across 'dag' which is a witty or amusing person and I'd say Alistair definitely qualifies for this. He always makes witty comments that keep us amused.
The bush telegraph or munga wire is currently suspended as we are at sea so no gossip to report, I am afraid.
As English is only my second language, it's always good to learn the local lingo, but I will consult our local Aussie Ryan before I use some of the other words in my little book and am forced to do an unscheduled walkabout!
Robin and Ryan are manning the bistro today and are busy cooking lunch now. Working in the galley is always quite interesting as you have to 'dance' around each other to get things done due to the limited space. I am looking forward to the beef stew they are making as it already smells delicious. It's only 10:50 am so I will have to wait a little while longer!
Hopefully, the wind picks up soon and we will get to Hobart soon and meet some Tassies. We have Robin's birthday celebration and a NYE party to look forward to.
I need to get ready for my watch now, so thank you for reading!
