I am writing this post on a Friday evening, it is the end of our 14th day at sea. I just came off watch and finished a great dinner cooked up by Dave and Jess. We are closing in on Sydney and the entire crew is talking about spending time with family and friends
The racing has been exciting. |After sailing more than 2,800 miles we still see our competition and the final standings are certainly still up for grabs.
When I think back, it hardly seems like 14 days have passed since we left Fremantle. I think this is because life on board is not measured in days. Instead, the rhythm of life on the boat is set by the watch system. When we are on watch, the focus is on sailing the boat and getting our jobs done. At the end of each watch, the focus is eating, sorting out personal kit and getting to bed so that you can be ready to start your next watch. It is a relentless, but surprising comforting, system. Today I was on the 4 a.m. to 8 a.m. watch. I really like that watch because I get to see the morning light break and at the end of watch, I can have a hearty warm breakfast. We make bread every day and having my two pieces of bread each morning has become an important part of my morning routine.
Sheila - - I love you lots and cannot wait to see you. To everyone else, I wish you safe travels and happy holidays.
