I SMILE
Sitting on the A-frame looking to bow,
my choice,
for a year I realise now
my home I can see.
I smile
Some holidays to come,
some new, some exotic,
Portimão, Cape Town, Zhuhai.
A shower, a bed, a steak and a drink
I smile.
We broach,
Vang. Mainsheet. Topping.
We broach,
reef one, reef two, reef three.
Suddenly, from the helm I hear
a pirate’s cry,
a roar of laughter.
We are safe!
I smile
When the going gets rough
I get sick and throw up,
my head comes out of the bag,
still,
I smile.
Doldrums, sunshine.
Six, forty north,
Twentyseven, six west.
For many a wish come true.
We all laugh.
I smile.
You can’t fight the sea,
you won’t conquer the sea.
She plays with you, she toys.
So play with her we do, her rules.
She knows it,
we enjoy it.
I smile
Punta del Este, my boat.
Punta del Este, my next stop.
Punta del Este, 1985,
my soulmate and I,
I love her.
I smile.
My two boys think I’m nuts.
My daughter is nuts, as I.
On Dare To Lead,
we compete.
I smile.
A sail to repair.
A tough job, an all nighter.
A cup of green tea and I start.
‘Closing Time’ and ‘Clown’ on my playlist,
Cohen and Sandé,
Elvis and Led Zep,
the happy and the sad.
I smile.
I ask for forgiveness
from those that I hurt.
I offer forgiveness
to those who hurt me.
I try to forgive,
for hurting myself.
I smile.
I smile
I look like a fool,
I don’t care;
I smile.
Dedicated to the crew, my friends, my smiling friends.
Dedicated to those I love.
Random thoughts from an Atlantic crossing.
