Entanglement of the Anti Wrap Net

A Team Sport

Sanya

Last evening during our watch, sailing from 8:00pm through 12:00am, under the light of a full moon, with clear skies and a favourable wind, we hoisted our Code 1 spinnaker flawlessly. The watch team was stoked at this late night evolution with the sails as it also involves dropping the Stay sail and Yankee 1. The final step of this evolution is to hoist the anti wrap net, which will prevent the Spinnaker from getting wrapped around the inner forestay, which we are all to familiar with.

The anti wrap net bag was brought up on deck to the bow of the boat and opened, we had just verified the anti wrap net by hoisting it in Portimao, because we had made improvements to ease the process and do it faster. Much to our dismay the anti wrap net was entangled in itself and we spent more time than we would like to get it hoisted.

The bow team and support consisted of Luke, Scott, Dennis and Will, this was a delicate operation and took great patience and skill, led by Luke and Scott. Our team is learning and growing together, and we were especially grateful for the patience of our AQP Jorge and Skipper Seumas as we completed the evolution.

These opportunities of learning and transferring skills are vital to our development of skills and team spirit. We are also grateful that we successfully hoisted the anti wrap net and there was clapping and cheers in the dark from the rest of our watch team, Liz, Barry and AQP Jorge in the cockpit.

Lessons learned: careful how you pack, flake and open your sail bag encouraging each other on progress and challenges, be safe, fun and fast.
