FREMANTLE STOPOVER: DEVELOPING SPORTS SUCCESS

The Clipper Race’s return to Western Australia sparked great sports development opportunities, not only amongst its active sailing community, but also with the wider sporting community in the region.

Proving the race’s ability to transcend usual sailing circles, two great sporting rivalries were put aside when GREAT Britain crew member and former Team GB Olympic hockey player Hannah Macleod joined up with one of Australia’s most proactive sports bodies to offer a strategic developmental learning opportunity for young players.

Hannah, who won hockey gold at the Rio Olympics and played against Australia many times in her national team career, took time out of her preparations for joining the All-Australian Leg 4 in Fremantle, to share best practice and personal experiences with 15 and 16-year-old members of the Talent Accelerant Program (TAP) at Hockey WA.

On the importance of the session, Hannah says: “I remember when GB sprinter Kriss Akabusi came into my school when I was little, and I still have that my photo with him and his signature.

“It was so inspirational so I know just how important it is for events like this. The conversations that you have you could literally inspire someone to change direction or give them the drive and passion to achieve whatever it is they want to achieve.”

The Clipper Race’s presence in WA also generated great interest from this active sailing community. Working with six local sailing and yacht clubs across the region the race developed an inter club regatta. The objective of the regatta was to drive recruitment interest for further editions of the race knowing that WA is a key market for development. This recruitment regatta was led by our Development Director, David Cusworth who hailed the activation as a great success, reporting positive discussion with potential Race Crew of the future.

Developing youth sailing and creating an ongoing legacy for the Clipper Race is vital in terms of both business and sports development. In support of this aim, over 100 students from the sailing development team at Scotch College, WA, were invited to Fremantle Sailing Club, which is one of the largest and most successful sailing facilities in the Southern Hemisphere, to get personal insights and up close inspirational experiences of this unique challenge.

£200,000 UNICEF MILESTONE REACHED

The Clipper Race reached a momentous milestone this week as the amount raised for Unicef by staff, crew and supporters topped the £200,000 mark, meaning that we are over halfway towards our £400,000 target for the Clipper 2017-18 Race edition.

It also means that since Unicef UK became an Official Charity Partner in the last edition of the race, more than half a million pounds has been raised for vital work in helping to protect and save the lives of thousands of children across the globe.

Mike Penrose, Executive Director of Unicef UK, said: “The Clipper Race sees everyday people take on one of the greatest challenges on earth, testing their wits, skills and courage in an endurance race across the toughest oceans. At the same time, children around the world are experiencing even more dangerous challenges – they’re facing disease, hunger and the chaos of war and disaster.

“Partnering with the Clipper Race has helped us to promote awareness of the crucial work that we are doing to protect some of the most vulnerable children and we are incredibly grateful for the extraordinary fundraising efforts of those involved in the race so far.”

With more than eight months of the world’s greatest ocean adventure still to go, the race is on to exceed the fundraising target that has been set.
