I’m feeling really good about the next race. Race 3 was a bit of a taster for the Southern Ocean, although not so much so for us as we stayed a long way north. We have a really strong crew on board; the other day we had a refresher sail in Table Bay and it was blowing 40 knots so it is good training. I think in Race 4 we can expect to see speed in excess of 30 knots. It can be a bit scary and as the skipper I will have to be very careful about who is on the helm and making sure they know what they are doing. However once they have experienced it they’ll understand how they have to handle the boat. The one thing we have to remember is that the boats are designed for the big downwind conditions.
At the moment we are just eleven points behind the lead, but it is still very early in the race and the difference in points is having one good race and one bad race really. With another thirteen races still left to go, I’m really not worried about it. It’s more about building the crew and strengthening them to move forwards.
