The South China fishing fleet has proven a navigation challenge for the Clipper Race fleet throughout the current and previous race. This afternoon, we experienced a lovely moment of fleet camaraderie while attempting to call five fishing vessels, heading towards our blue boat at 11 knots with a unnervingly close CPA. While trying to call them, they insisted on Mandarin. Within seconds, we had CV31, CV27 and CV30 on the radio offering all forms of Mandarin help, Duolingo on the oceans kind of vibe. CV30 took on the conversation as our nearest boat and as the Mandarin ensued we watched the fishing fleet make abrupt turns to swiftly avoid us. A sigh of relief was felt on deck. It was a really sweet moment and reminded us that we may be many miles from home but we have all kinds of support around. In between dodging fishing vessels, pots and lines we have managed a bit of racing, and are looking forward to some spinnaker conditions in the next stage of this race. We have a small but mighty team, fueled by the food Sue purchased for us in the Vietnam markets for this leg’s victualling, so we are ready to rumble!
