To help create awareness for, and lend more power to the final stages of their bid to make the Gold Coast the preferred city to host the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Gold Coast City Council and Gold Coast Tourism got together and became a Team Sponsor of the yacht Gold Coast Australia.

The team’s documented success in the first four races, coupled with the significant media coverage generated in regions as far flung as Europe, South America, South Africa and Western Australia contributed to securing victory
 in the final Commonwealth Games vote on 11 November 2011. Gold Coast Australia contributed a PR Value of £195,139,254.

In addition, to promote the city’s status for the remaining seven months of the Clipper Race, the interim 2018 Commonwealth Games logo was officially unveiled on the sponsored yacht by Queensland Acting Minister for Sport, Simon Finn, during the Gold Coast stopover in December 2011.
