Guy Waites is a highly-skilled ocean racer who has a vast and varied background both on and off the water.
Over the last 25 years, Guy has refitted and prepared two yachts to sail solo across the Atlantic Ocean, built an impressive catalogue of racing and ocean passage accomplishments, and developed excellent team leadership skills.
For Guy, who was born in Leeds and grew up in Yorkshire, becoming a Clipper 2019-20 Round the World Yacht Race Skipper is a career and personal life highlight.
On his appointment as Clipper Race Skipper, Guy says: “It is so great to be a Clipper Race Skipper and it is going to be a fantastic eleven month race.
“Partly, it's a relief because I started the ball rolling some 14 months ago and I have been wearing the carpet out at home, pacing up and down as I’ve been waiting to find out!”
Guy is no stranger to the Clipper Race. A familiar face on both the race circuit and at HQ, the 52-year-old’s extensive experience as Mate for the second half of the 2017-18 Race Clipper Race, in addition to being a First Mate for the training department, has equipped him with invaluable first-hand experience to bring to his role as Skipper.
Guy adds: “Having been a First Mate during the second half of the 2017-28 edition, there was only one way I could go from there!”
In addition to sailing, Guy was previously a professional photographer and his experience of leading teams as a line manager will put him in great stead for leading a diverse team.
A sailor to the core, when Guy isn’t teaching people to sail, you will find him on the water or maintaining boats, or writing about sailing on his blog! In addition to leading a team in the Clipper Race, one of Guy’s lifetime goals is to sail solo, non-stop, around the world in the future.
