Microcosm. We are in one. A race in miniature. It’s taken a while to realise, but the Subic Bay, around Nansei Islands and back to Subic Bay is actually the Round the World Race in miniature.

Odd not to be moving forward towards London, but ultimately its the same idea – start and finish in the same place, sail around a few land masses. Slight understatement there…

Not only is the race a scaled down circumnavigation we have had Doldrums, squalls, high angles of lean, flat calm and everything in between. We haven’t surfed but that’s about the only thing we haven’t done. Every sail, bar the storm sails and Yankee 3 have been up and down; we’ve reefed and kited down wind. I’ve even just been up the mast with the Code 1 Spinnaker flying as we head down wind to Subic Bay to fix a line caught on a spreader. Great fun to do as the sun sets and certainly memorable.

Ultimately that’s what this is about, whether it’s one leg, one race or a circumnavigation – the experience, the memories, the challenges, new skills, the successes and occasional failures but most importantly the new friends, the good company.

Why not give it a go yourself?
